Going hunting tomorrow

Post by gundog »

Going hunting tomorrow. Have only been on 4 hunts so far this year so I am anxious to get out there. Weather will be less than ideal (teens to 20 degrees) - I can handle those temps but may make scenting a little tough on the hounds. I am still debating on what and how many dogs to take. I would rather have the temps near or a little above freezing but gotta get out there when you can. Will try to get some pics up after the hunt.

I with agree PA, you guys that can hunt on Sunday are lucky. Wish they would pass Sunday hunting here in PA. It is really hard to get some of the younger kids interested when they only get to hunt one day a week.

i'll be out there too gundog. scenting is up in the air. it may be good or it may stink. my dogs struggled a bit the last few hunts due to the very cold weather. lots of losses but a few were very good runs. I don't get it. thats why its call hunting. last hunt i went on 12 were jumped only 6 were taken. poor running scenting wasn't so good.

We did ok. We bagged 7. The hounds did great. I wouldn't have thought scenting would have been good with temps in the teens but they ran like it was 35 degrees out. Had one run an hour and 15 min. with 5 to maybe 10 min. max down time during entire run. Never did get him- pulled the hounds off to go find a different one. Had another run 50 min. before we bagged him- this one too only few minutes down time. We probably would have bagged a dozen however we hunted this native grass for almost 3 hours and just couldn't get shots. We should have moved on to different cover much sooner than we did- oh well the hounds were having fun. Ended the hunt with a kill on a nice long run right at dusk. Yeah!
