Re: Skinny Dog Syndrom
I Said it before and Will again PEANUT BUTTER the cheaper the oilier the better!!!!!!
My Dad and uncles had Coon Dogs in Mo when i was a kid and i can remember them going on road trips to get DOG FOOD they would bring home a couple 55 gal Drums of PEANUT BUTTER and mix it with Dry oats or CHEPO Dog Food from the local mill..
This would be all they got Was told it was HIGH in Protien and FAT and thats what they used to keep weight on the Dogs..
Since that Time WE have used it also To FATTEN up and SLICK up a Skinny hound..
What have ya Got to loose...It aint gonna HURT the hound and it is CHEAP........
Found this on the net
Do a Search for Dog Weight gain and look at all the recipes all of them have ONE thing in Common...
PEANUT BUTTER..
To Add Weight to Dog
Give your dog peanut butter. Peanut butter is a food that is high in protein, calories and fat and should put weight on your dog in no time. You can mix peanut butter along with dry food as a way to get your dog to eat an entire meal. You can also scoop out a tablespoon of peanut butter and let your dog lick the peanut butter off. If you choose to give peanut butter as a snack, you can give your dog 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter three to four times a day.

TC.... sounds like you are saying PEANUT BUTTER is the answer... is that correct ???
After words do you find it difficult for your hounds to talk or whistle???

Just had to throw that in for humor...
Stands to reason... being somewhat of a health nut and into body building... Peanut Butter is a staple
for protein and "Good Fat" (the type yout body can use fairly easily). This time of year the hounds are in constant
motion per say as their body shivers to help keep core temps up, which burns nutrients. The less absorbable fat
available for the body... the more it muscle will be used in its place... thus creating a skinny hound.
My hounds are not "Skinny" but certainly less present than in the summer when we do not run as much. I feed
Black Gold Black Bag (26/18) during warmer times and Blue Bag (24/20) during winter more active months (higher fat content).
I feed twice a day rather than once in the evening to keep the "Furnace" burning inside better.
I have not had the need (yet) to suppliment... but will certainly use Peanut Butter when / if the time comes.

Re: Skinny Dog Syndrom
Gotta agree with andrew, I've been using self feeders for 20 years with high quality food (Canidae). My hounds are not fat either, they will go and nibble throughout the day as they need it. I feel they run better also because they are neither hungry or full.
They usually go through more in the winter up here, as conditions and their bodies call for it.
I wean puppies right to the feeders so they know the food is always available which in turn I feel teaches them never to over eat. Older hounds not use to the feeders will over eat for about the first month until they learn also that the food is always there.
I bought a 2 year old female this past fall and she pigged out for about a month, got heavy, but now she just eats when her body calls for it and is in good shape.
Just for reference, my feeders hold 20lbs. of food. I filled them the 2nd week of November and just refilled them this past week.
My hounds are kenneled individually also.

Re: Skinny Dog Syndrom
I dont know where ya'll are from but years ago my grandpa in Minnesota told me that during hunting season if you have dogs that no matter how much you feed wont put on or keep weight could be cold at night and if your dog runs all day and shivers all night, they will look bad. we would pick up beaver carcases from trappers and let the dogs feed on them. But consider what your housing them in the size of the hounds house in proportion to the size of the hound, even if you have two beagles in a box that is too big you can still end up with cold dogs. This obviously is not always the case but just a suggestion.
