Well we all have different opinions as to this rabbit thing, but how many of you taken the time to read about the rabbit. Here are a few sites, take a little time and read them and then come back and post your veiw. Rabbit hunting to me is a sport. Our ancester's used wild game to put food on the table. There are a lot of families, that do it even today during these hard times. We have food banks that will take our deer to use to feed families, that do not have, what we are as lucky to have. I enjoy the sport of rabbit hunting, whether its just running dogs, training pups, competetion hunting or putting food on the table. Read about the rabbit. Have a good year and remember that, while we are arguring about this, animal activist's are working against us.

To old to cut the mustard, you can always run beagles
Re: You don t need to be killing them rabbits.
everyone does have their own opinions on this... but the bottom line is you shouldnt harrass or try to push your opinion on someone else. if you can legally shoot a truckload of rabbits in your state... go for it and i will be jealous
and if you just want to run, thats great too... if your a "gunhunter" then you better be running those dogs in the off season or their wont be many kill pics to show off!!
everyone needs to think why they got beagles in the first place. personally i got beagles so i could have some good gunhunting. i was tired of beating the brush and wanted some help. back then i didnt care about this bloodline or that bloodline or line control or swinging or whatever, i just wanted a dog to move the rabbits around. i slowly got into beagles and over time i began to try to "perfect" my dogs according to traits i decided i liked. a friend of mine could care less about gunhunting... hes in it for trialing and the "fame". when i get dogs from him he usually has no idea if they are gunbroke..lol. he goes gunhunting about once a year and thats fine. and then there are guys who just like to hear a good race... no guns or trials and thats fun too. no one is wrong... the only thing that is wrong is when you try to tell someone else what they should or shouldnt be doing with their dogs. i understand some guys dont have a lot of rabbits in their area but please dont be jealous or look down upon those of us who have decent populations. also some of you guys have 6 month long gunseasons and can shoot 1 or 2 as you please... well here in IL i barely get a 2 month season, so im gonna shoot them up during that 2 months and fill my fridge so i can enjoy rabbit all year long. i knoe for a fact if i had those extra 4 months like some of you, id be a bit less hardcore at it but i have to go 10 months til the next season where as every 6 months some guys get another season...
anyway... just enjoy what YOU do and dont worry about everyone else... which is what i have tell my 5 year old

Black dirt If you have enough intelligence to piece this together here it is again .Nothing was said about DONT SHOOT ANY RABBITS BY ME ,I said I get furious when a few or a lot of people go out into a place that has a lot of bunnies and they start slaughtering rabbits ,in the squat ,jumped by them ,short runs or what ever I think this is disgusting and people who do this are idiots in my book .So if you do this then you know what i think of you .Go slaughter them bunnies and get your belly full and go preach your Idea of reason to some one else .I shot 2 yesterday myself 2 out of 10 .I know darn well if you killed 150 rabbits the dog didnt circle them all .So brag up your rabbit dawgs .End

Re: You don t need to be killing them rabbits.
hey eddieooo..........have you ever hunted woodstrips? the rabbits run up then turn around and come back down normally taking the outskirt's. would you call that a circle? So how many times does he have to go up and down the strip for a person to shoot at it? Most cases two fly out and run across to the near by thicket. What if the circle is small circle do I pass and wait till I find one that runs a half mile circle? Tell me so I can follow your rules on how to properly rabbit hunt to make it not seem they were slaughtered. funny how you say if you killed 150rabbits none were circled. thats hilarous thanks for the laugh. and always remember to leave some for seed.......nother great one liner from you. i think i hear a ba dum dum phssss
different terrian in different states, more rabbits in other states, different type of cover etc etc etc....people have more than one place to slaughter as you put it. many places hold tons of rabbits if you manage properly year after year it will produce. To each their own. Guess out of the 10 that were jumped only two made that cirlce you was looking for.
How the heck do you shoot a rabbit in the squat? Never seen that happen before. I've had several that we step on I call the dogs and put them on it. And when the dogs are running a rabbit and when walking around to get a shot and it has happened several times this season I'll jump one or two sitting in the grass. I make sure I know where it was. After the rabbit that was running by the dogs is killed I call the dogs over to the area and they find it and another race is on. Big deal you make it sound like everyone that gets a ton of rabbits all the time jump shoot.... shoot at them in a squat...lol short runs blah blah blah blah......Short runs thats one of the most dumbest things I've heard. The off season the dogs can run them for how ever long they want. When season is in short or long stray's or not I see a rabbit it gets shot and on to the next one thats what rabbit dogs are for to get you the rabbit.

Just going to throw this out here. Some areas are not going to have large numbers of rabbits no matter how few you shoot. Some areas you can hurt the population by not shooting them also.

Re: You don t need to be killing them rabbits.
Good post Joey. To think i was thinking of letting the rabbits have a break for a day or two. But after reading all this ant-hunting, veggie eaters crap, I think I will have to head back to the killing fields tommorow, to continue the massacre that is rabbit hunting. It may have to wait untill the afternoon, as I think I may contribute to the slaughter of the poor innocent geese in the morning.

bring a video camera will ya chad so's I can see some of your hounds run cause I'm fixing on heading up that way late jan into feb onto some top secret farms that are loaded so I can slaughter some more. Their may be an open spot for a one Mr. Chad Campbell if the landowners will allow me to bring my brother = you..........lol not 100% sure but I will work on it. I'd like to see some of your dogs go thats only if you want.
Re: You don t need to be killing them rabbits.
come hunt with me then... im off work til march!! we dont jump shoot rabbits ever nor do we shoot them "in the squat" as you call it. when the dogs jump/strike a rabbit, we talk our strategy real quick and spread out accordingly. if one only gets 1/2 or 3/4 circled... then so be it. as thick of terrain as we have, i would say three fourths are completely circled at least once... some two or three times and then a few only 1/2 or 3/4 circle... but we are fine with that as the dogs are doing their part and this is gun HUNTING. i do plenty of RUNNING the other 10 months of the year. in the cooler months i average 2 or 3 days of three to four hours of running and in the hot summer months i might only get out once or twice a week for a couple hour tune up... just depends on heat... so i do plenty of "just running" also. i got a couple buddies close by that shoot well over 200 per season themselves also. they will laugh if i only get 50 this season...lol. they are real gun hunters. and all the rabbits are "running" when shot and all get eaten also. people around here have lots of wild game dinners or will give some to oldtimers who cant beat the brush anymore. so dont worry about what im doing... im doing just fine.eddywilliams wrote:I know darn well if you killed 150 rabbits the dog didnt circle them all .So brag up your rabbit dawgs .End
