shootin a rabbit..

Post by bamabeagler »

ive been rabbit huntin for 3 years now and not many people in my area rabbit hunt, so im kinda still figurin things out on my own. when me and my buddies hear the dogs jump, one of us will stay close to where we heard them jump and a couple will go on the other side..kinda where the dogs are headed and someone will go to the right and some one will go to the left, kinda like a big circle. sometimes the rabbit goes in a whole different direction than we expect and we will wind up runnin around to different positions for 30 minutes tryin to cut him off. this dont happen all the time but we have our days and it is very frustrating lol. how do some of yall cut that sneaky son of a gun off...what are some of yalls ways of lining up? any little info will be greatly appreciated.

I go out by myself alot and 90% of the time I just go to where it was jumped and eventually it will be back, it might be an hour later but it will be back. The only exception to that is in Feb/March breeding season when a male snowshoe hare will go straight away so far you start to think it's a deer, that time of year I just keep guessing and hope I get it right eventually

I agree with Dixie. Right where it was jumped. 90% of the time they'll come back by. I think its easier to kill them hunting solo not as much traffic on foot and the rabbit will circle around me all day. JMO

I like to stick close to where it was jumped. Some rabbits are way different and won't circle, but most do. If the dogs put a lot of pressure on the rabbit, he will start doubling back and forth, probably what your seeing with your case.

Staying close to the jump point is always a good bet but when hunting with several shooters I like spreading out and covering traveling lanes. If you hunt a piece of property more than once you will see the ways rabbits run just set up quietly and let the dogs run it around to those lanes.

Go to where they are jumped have another guy go stand by a big brush pile or structure where rabbits hide, have the other guy over look a path or trail. Last thing is follow the dogs, just keep pushin rabbit away from its original position. Just my experience

Since I am the one "working the dogs", I see or hear 90% of the jumps so I normally set-up in an area where I can see near the jump. I normally try to get up on a log, stump, hill, rock, or other vantage point. Once they begin to turn back on the "circle", I begin watching in the direction of the barking. Keep an eye out along trails, field roads, ditches, depressions, fence openings, or other terrain "funnels". If the rabbit "short circles" or fails to return the first pass, I walk in to an area that I am pretty sure the rabbit went through on the first round and pick out a new vantage point and get ready for the second circle. Since I get practice spotting the rabbit year round while running, I have gotten pretty good picking out good spots to stand. If I am alone, I will eventually see and/or take the rabbit. Of course, with lots of other hunters along, I often only get one chance unless the others are really off on their shooting that day.
