i dont know if i would call it an injury but they wont run them again most old timers believe this to be affective
HAHAHA...Now thats a good one. Thats the best way to stop them from running anything and everything.
but I better not see anyone shot a dog in front of me. I know its been done for many years but there is no need for that. Give the dog to someone for a pet.

And you Idiots wonder where PETA and the ASPCA and all those other orgs. get there fuel. Just keep posting your stupidity about spinning dogs in barrels and 12 gauges and the likes.
this response is not intended for everyone who posted on this thread but if it ticked you off then it probably was intended for you.
The original post was a simple question about breaking dogs off deer and went way south. I don't care how each of you break your dogs or handle trash runners but have enough sense not to post it for all the world to feed off of and use against the general beagler community. I use e collars and I think they are an effective tool but not to be overdone.
Just think about what you are putting on a public site before you open your mouth and insert your foot.

For the guys that think that an e collar is all that is needed...they work most of the time, but not all of the time. Just wonder how many of the ecollar only crowd have dogs that they wouldn't think of taking to the field without an e collar on, because they know they will go on the first deer track. . There are some dogs that go right on running trash even after they have been shocked. These methods may sound bad, but let peta find out you have used the 22 method and you will find yourself in the cross bar hotel, just the same.
Me personally, I think it's cruel to stand and listen to a dog run a deer into the ground.

On your post you quote a verse and I will too.
I suggest you read Matthew 7.....I will be praying for your soul from eternal damnation.
Sorry guys, I'm not putting my dogs in a barrel, dryer, dusting em with the 12 gauge or anything crazy like that
I heard from one ol' timer to put drag the tarsal through the yard to leave a scent, then put it on a small rat trap, and when the dog gets to it, it will get a snap on the nose. Doens't hurt them bad, but they won't wanna run em anymore.
E-collars used properly can cure about anything worth keepin. There are some hounds that can not be fixed and they don't make a gundog or trial dog. They make a pet or
use to someone who runs deer and hunts them that way. If you consistantly use an e-collar PROPERLY they work a large percentage of the time. Situationally they may not be the
fix all, but they are a most valuable tool in the long road to a good hound. JMO.

Not trying to kill my dogs here
I agree. My only method is a good scolding and the end of my dog lead. Have shock collars just dont believe anything works as good as a good woopin and scolding from the owner. Dogs are loyal animals and aim to please and there is nothing harder on a dog than disappointing its owner thats why direct repremands from the owner is the most affective way to teach a dog. JMO and I understand you cant always cut them off the track to scold them and wip them.
Take your kids huntin and you wont have to hunt for your kids.
I always break a pup with shock collar before they every run in the wild. Once they start running deer its much harder to break them.
Expose them to deer, shock them before they ever learn to run track. 20 years of doing this and only 1 dog I couldnt ever get control of. That dog is a rabbit champion in someone elses kennel, probly 8 years old and I would bet a paycheck he would run a deer today if he had the chance.
Some of the guys that are strongly against drastic measures to break deer runners have deer runners in their kennel. The dogs are at great risk of being hit by a car, lost in the woods, or stolen. I know very few guys that will admit to having deer runners, but its funny how year after year we have deer races in the field trials.....and thats suppost to be the best dogs people own. Imagine if they brought the rest of their kennel????
I love this topic,
I also love it when ANYONE swears his dogs wont run deer. There are dogs that dont, but every dog has his day.

Dave Swiger: I was a little quick to let some stupidity fall out of my mouth and onto the keypad so to speak.
You responded with "eternal Damnation"

I will say that if I don't repent from that kind of attitude and continue to spout off you are absolutely right.
I did not set a good example as a Christian and would like to take this Opportunity to publicly apoligize and say that regardless of how I feel I should have worded it differently. I still stand behind My point but not in so many harsh words.
So don't worry about the Eternal Damnation thing but I will gladly accept the offfer for a prayer or two and will do the same for you. Kris

You have my respect for that! Good post! We all at times need to be better examples and with our words is an easy one to be nonchristian like.
I know I have to make an effort to watch that I have a 5 and 8 year old watching. Again, good post.
Hey USMC. I can relate to being on a tight budget, and would love to have an E Collar some time in the future...but can't swing it anytime soon. I noticed on Ebay they had remote controlled shock collars for a song and a dance ($35 shipped with an actual 30 money back guarentee). Granted, they aren't E collars, but I bet it would be good enough to break your dogs of their bad habit. I know it would tear me up to sit at home when i could be running dogs. It's deer season here in Pa, and I love deer hunting... but I sure miss bunny huntin' though. These cheap collars ship in 3-5 days, they say. Just a suggestion that could get you back in the game with minimal expense.
Thanks Joe, I was checking them out on ebay. Alot of them are shipping straight from HongKong. Not sure if they are the same ones you're talking about. I found a guy on HuntingPA.com that is gonna get me a SportDog 400 for pretty cheap. I just purchased the add a collar from the factory and should be training by the beginning of next week.
I think I'm gonna drag a deer leg, tail, tarsal, through the yard and soon as they get "birdy" I'm gonna flip em over with the collars. Hopefully that will be a start. But I'm gonna try to acclimatize them first with simple come and down commands. No response= shock
They come= no shock and a pat on the head
We'll see what happens I guess. I would absolutely HATE not having them out 2nd season.
HEY, quit listing to all this old time way of breaking dogs off deer, back in those days deer was not as plunetiful as they are today, i know a guy that tried every trick in the book, what did he get hurt dogs and a lot of work for nothing. so get some collars or borough one from someone you know. GOD BLESS.
Sarge, this is a bit off topic, but I trust that you are headed in the right direction with all the info above. I just wanted to add something you might already know. If you cut off a tarsal gland, be sure not to use the knife to field dress or butcher another deer until it has been thoroughly cleaned. The stuff in those glands that warns other bucks away and attracts does is potent stuff. It will make a stinky mess of your meat.
