I sure hope he gets better. TLC is sometimes the best remedy.

I'm trying my best but it is very dificult to see him lay there like that. Vet thinks he'll come around and walk again but he can't stand up and he just lays there like that. I hate seeing him suffer like this. I don't think he is in pain so maybe he can just lay there like that and be fine.

His lungs are congested though. I can hear it when he breathe's. Vet took x-ray said they look a little congested but he should be ok.

His back legs are sort of stiff looking so I stretch them out for him. I did that again this morning. He seemed better than last night on the stiffness.

He does move his front legs and rear legs just can't stand up. He falls over if you try. His body is so loose with no strength. I hope the food in him helps. He went poop this morning and their was a good amount. He hasn't passed stool in like 3-4 days I think.

I went ahead and let Lisa out. She is Pistol's best bud and kennel mate. That sure cheered Pistol up. He was waggin his tail and trying to smell her. And Lisa was all over him and trying to help him out. It was cool to see. She was laying next to him and was trying to comfort him. So I let her stay with him for an hour. She got a little to comfortable....lol

Does anyone have any suggestions on food. I need to stick the pills in there so he don't know. Got to trick him to eat the pills. The cat food is just something nasty and I don't want to mess with that stuff anymore. I need him to get strong fast and put some wieght on. He has lost alot. Also try to make his stool more firm if possible.

Cooked burger or something along that line usually entices them to eat when they normally wouldnt. It will help give them strength as well, or at least that has been my experience. Probably wont improve his stool any however.

I always but my dogs pills in a piece of Banana...lol. Dont know how much that would help with stool, but my dogs eat it. Also bread works well along with any type of cooked meat, ground beef...

found this in another thread thru search function

The last year that I was really able to run dogs, before I hurt my back, I used a little mix that really kept my dogs at top notch. Most of you know that when you run your dogs hard they can really start getting poor looking. This is what I used to help keep my up to snuff. Can't remember where I got the recipe, but it worked.
Just don't feed too much as it will put weight back on them fast. Too much weight is worse than not enough as we all know.

The Recipe for keeping dogs top notch.
Ingredients:

10 pounds hamburger meat (cheap and fatty)
1 large box of Total cereal
1 large box of regular oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/4 cup of molasses (I found a guy around here that made molasses and it seemed to be better than store bought)
10 raw eggs (shells and all)
10 packs of regular gelatin
1 Tbs. of Flaxseed oil
Dab of salt

Mix all the ingredients real good together and it will look like a messed up meatloaf.
I rolled them into golf ball sized balls and kept them in the freezer.
When I had a dog getting too skinny, sluggish, or just plain out poor looking and I knew they were free of worms and parasites. I would unthaw a few of these balls and feed it to them for as at least a few days until I saw them start getting their shine and fire back.
They dogs love it and will eat it all if you let them.

good to see he is home. what did the vet say is special about the cat food stuff. if nothing is special about it just go and get some canned dog food. try to get something easy to digest. there are a lot of good canned dog food out there and can be tough to decide. dont skimp on price though get the good stuff. it sounds like a good recipe, a good way to get some fat and carbs and energy would be bioling some noodles up and mixing with canned dog food or other people food like shredded chicken or tuna fish. any well balanced people food would work. dont forget about yogurt. i would think you want to keep the food easy to digest but not pass right through. sometimes grains can be tough to digest. i know with our house dog we give her left over cereal the kids dont eat and she has seemed to get a little bound up after wards. well if he got up and moved to poop he might be walking around in a couple days. dont say he wont. you could also get a cage crate for him to stay in while you are not home and at night. it will keep any messes contained and when he does start moving around he wont be eating your couch when you are at work. good job getting him home, i am sure he needed it.

later, dave

GREAT idea on the canned dog food. I wasn't thinking of that. My mind is a mess right now. Lot of stuff going on with my dog being sick and all.

The vet did say he wanted Pistol to eat 4 cans of that food a day. That = alot of stool. I believe I'll stop by Petco on my way home today to buy one of those large pet crates with the slide out bottom. I'm not home thru the day and I'd feel better he was penned up. When i get home I can wash the pan out and we are good to go again. I'm sure I'd have to clean him up too. Its a big job but I'm up for it. He takes care of me and hunts hard now Its my turn to help him out.

When I get home I think I"m going to let lisa in the house again so she can cheer him up some. The rest of my dogs know something is up and they are on alert looking at the door. They know something is going on. Its so cool to see how the other dogs react they know and want to help him too.

Joey,

If he's is reluctant to eat you may want to try bread with jelly and butter (not peanut butter).

He want to eat but he really can't. He will put his nose to the food but then his head starts moving from side to side really bad. So I have been tossing the food in his mouth and he swallows it. Same thing for water. I have to hold his head steady so he can drink or he wouldn't be able to. His head goes from side to side real bad.

hot dog chunks.
is he drinking water????
do you have an iv setup if he needs fluids, they are cheap and will work under the skin, will make a camel hump but it will be absorbed within a hour or so.
if you really need to /and you like the dog enuff, maybe purchase a feeding tube, here is a link, scroll down to find the tubes, maybe some watered dog canned food fed into him a few times may help, measure the distance with the tube outside his mouth to his last rib and thats how far you put it in.

many years ago we had to administer fluids to a couple dogs, had bags of ricketts and iv tube, was simple, put behind shoulder blades and let the drip flow at max setting,i beleive was 60 drips per minute---you may ask your vet if you may need trained in this before you need to take him back in,its fairly easy to do and get the supplies cheaply
good luck i hope all works out

he drinks water and eats I just have to help him out with it. Just have to do 3 times a day. Morning when I get home from work and then about 10pm at night.
