Re: SUTSUMA BLOOD LINE
couple guys in jay county have them

Re: SUTSUMA BLOOD LINE
The only experience that have had was at a trial in Alabama about fifteen years ago. The pack was cast and after they jumped a rabbit they soon had a split. The Satsuma dog was on one rabbit, the rest of the pack was on another. I remember listening as the Satsuma dog circled his rabbit solo. He was a real smooth running hound.

Re: SUTSUMA BLOOD LINE
I have owned several and I have been to several field trials with them. They are fast , they hunt good, and they like the front. They are to much for me. I had crossed them with something to slow them down to a upper medium speed dog. This is what I prefer it also gives them the a little more nose on those bad scenting days. This is just my opinion. I have also heard that they love deer but I have never had the ones I owned run a deer nor have I ever seen one. I know Mr Mel had a place Michigan with several rabbit pens on it about 8 to 10 years ago. These dogs are pretty popular in the south.

Re: SUTSUMA BLOOD LINE
I have a male that I bought directly from Mel back in 2001 that will die here. Had him in a couple of UKC trials and he won them both. Here is a short history on him. He started slow and when he did start he didn't open much. Didn't think too much of him at 1.5 yrs he was just a pack dog. But let me tell you, his second rabbit season everything must have fell in place and he wanted nothing but to dominate the pack and he could. I had a pack of old school Branko hounds (lumberjack and heliprop) that could flat move a rabbit. He absolutley took over. He is a rough if you don't solo him. When you do, he can run it like he's looking at it. He is a one man dog, when I take him hunting he doesn't run off or even start until I head into the woods. Don't need a lead, doesn't run deer. If I look at a brush pile he's in it. If he walks by, don't bother with it because there isn't a rabbit in it. He not perfect but he is one of those rare ones that you would never get rid of.
If you can find a female bred like him, I would be interested in breeding him for a pup. Look at Woody's picture in the Sep 09 Better Beagling he looks identical.

Re: SUTSUMA BLOOD LINE
I have a 1/2 Satsuma 1/2 Branko bred female. She was sired by luckone's male in the above post. She was somewhat slow to start, but she is doing real well now. She jumps rabbits and has a sick nasty mouth that is used correctly. She is maybe 13 inches. I am starting to really like her. I acyually bred her to my male, and I kept a female that started at 5 months in the wild. She gets better every time.
