You are exactly right which is why we can really only go by percentages just like when you get a true nonpartison opinion poll going.

JOEY they are much smarter than a kennel dog. often rabbit smarter. i have had many out side in the kennel, but the best of the best sleep on my pillow. i have when thew alot beagles since i started trialing. starting them from pups all except a few would run jump and pound a rabbit all on there own.

if i were you i would take a pup and bring it in the house. use a shocker to house break it. i put them on at 8 or 9 weeks. they break fast. 1 to 2 treatments and they bark at the door. you will see what you mold take it every where(just think of the time you have in it that ) YOU WILL SEE. IF IT IS THERE, AND THEY GOT IT. IT WILL SHINE LIKE A STAR.

THE BEST BEAGLE I OWNED WAS AWESOME. HE WOULD SIT PRETTY, SHAKE, HIGH FIVE,LAY DOWN, ROLE OVER, SHUT THE DOOR (WHEN HE CAME IN FROM OUT SIDE) OPEN THE FRIDGE
AND LAST BUT FAR FROM LEAST SMOKE A RABBIT LIKE YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE. ANY ONE OF US WOULD LOVE 5 OF HIM. ONCE THE SNOW HIT HE WOULD CATCH A LOT OF RABBITS. HE MADE UKC MINIMAL HUNTS. I COULD TELL HIM TO SIT IN THE TRUCK WITH THE WINDOW DOWN,AND THE PACK WOULD BURN THE RABBIT BUY. HE WOULD STAY UNTIL I SAID HE COULD RUN SHAKING TO DEATH(BUT KNOWING TO STAY) WHEN I SAID GO AHEAD HE WOULD FLY IN THERE AND YOU BET THE RACE WOULD PICK UP 10 PERCENT NO MATTER THE CONDITIONS.

YOU WILL NEVER SEE A KENNEL DOG DO HALF OF THIS STUFF.
IF YOU THINK I AM BLOWING SMOKE UP YOUR AZZ JUST ASK ANYONE WHO NEW THE DOG I HAD HIM DO TRICK FOR EVERY ONE.

THE LAST PERSON WHO SAID A HOUSE DOG COULDN'T RUN A RABBIT. SENDS ME PUPS TO START NOW

LIKE I SAID TRY IT IT WILL MORE THAN LIKELY MAKE YOUR BEST DOG

IF I LOOK AT MY TROPHY CASE I SEE A LOT OF 1 PLACES WHEN I LOOK AT HOW MUCH MONEY I HAVE SPENT TO GET THEM I CAN STILL COUNT THE DOLLARS OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. 3 CHAMPIONS SINCE I STARTED TRIALING AND BEAT SOME GREAT DOGS. STILL MY BEST HAVE BEEN RAISED IN THE HOUSE

IT'S LIKE SKINNY GIRLS DON'T KNOCK IT TILL YOU TRY IT

Sounds like a great dog chapkosbeagles.

Here is what my thougts are. I believe the dogs should no nothing more than the kennel the dog box and the field. Going from the kennel to the truck to the field to hunt. Then from the field back to the truck and home in the kennel. repeat over and over and over. Thats it. yeah I let mine out from time to time in the yard for a bit. I also pet mine after I get done feeding at night. I give them lil treats too and sometimes table scraps. But I focus on one thing and thats them being gun-dogs.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't work. Just I wouldn't do it. I don't know facts on the matter I don't know about poll numbers I don't know about pertentage rates and so on. But I think a beagle that lives in the house will be more prone to lack hunt and stick around you more and not have that drive as a kennel dog would also would have a harder time packing up. I could be totally wrong. Yeah if a dog has it........ it has it. But sometimes problems can be man made.

I friend of mine that is a board member here has a house beagle and uses it for hunting. its doing great so far. So I have nothing against people who choose to do this. I'm just sticking to what I know and all mine and future beagles of mine will be kennel dogs.

Personally I've been around hounds my whole life and I didnt figure it would hurt her. I'm of the opinion that a dog either has the instincts and desire or it doesnt and there isnt a whole lot thats gona change a dogs natural instincts. I just wanted to hear others opinions on it. Sounds to me like most people believe what I originally believed anyway. Thanks for the input!

She's going to be a hard dog to keep in the house unless I want to use a shocker. Every time I turn her out to go do her business she wants to run to the ditch and go hunt.

I HERE YA JOEY BUT MY WORST DOG (COUGH DOG ) HAS WON MORE THAT MOST KENNEL HOUNDS.
I NOT TRYING TO RUB IT IN BUT MAN I TELL YA I HAVE SOME OF THE BEST HOUNDS IN THE COUNTRY. THEY CATCH A LOT OF RABBITS AND MOST OF THE SOUTHERN BOYS THAT HAVE TOOK THE TIME TO COME RUN A FEW DAYS SEE WHAT HUNT SPEED AND DRIVE REALLY IS. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW HOW SMART A HOUND IS BY SITTING IN THE KENNEL. I HAVE ALL THE PUPS GONE BEFORE THEY ARE BORN IF YOU WANT TO SEE SPEED AND DRIVE GRAB YOUR BEST HOUND PUT A FEW DOLLARS IN THE GAS TANK AND COME SEE YOUR HOUND GET BEAT UP ON FOR A BIT THAN I WILL SELL YOU A PUP OUT OF A LAP DOG

WHEN I TALK PERCENTAGES I TALK FIRST PLACES AND CHAMPIONS AND HOW MUCH IT COST TO MAKE THEM THAT WHEN I GO TO THE HUNT I WIN FLAT OUT MY HOUNDS PUT UP HIGH SCORES THAT MAKE EYES LIKE THIS

My experience has been that a hunting dog hunts. If putting the dog in a house at night will take the hunt out of them then they weren't all that in the first place.

It is a great place to live. We've definately got alot of game. The deer population and quality where I live is in excellent shape. We've got plenty of rabbits, coyotes, fox, and bobcats. I run coyote hounds as well and theres no shortage of coyotes around this area. Take out a few coyotes maybe save a few rabbits. :D

I could never stand dog hair all over the inside of the house. Beagle coats are not designed to be bathed twice a week as that oily coat is designed to help them in the briars and pricker bushes.

If a person doesnt mind the conditions that creates Im certain it would go a long way in the bonding between dog and owner.

That being said, I spend an awful lot of time outside around my dogs in the yard or kennel. Two feed times a day. Plenty of time splitting wood or doing yard work where the dogs are interacting with me. Not to mention 4+ trips a week to the woods. You wont get more out of a dog than you put into it. If your dog is bred right and you have invested the time I don't think living in the house is going to do any harm.

I have a dog that was raised in the house and three out in the kennel. When she was in heat I didn't run her and we did not jump as many rabbits. I know from first hand experience that keeping a dog in the house does not make a dog not hunt or sit by your feet.

Just got back from 8 days of hare hunting up in northern Maine. We ran the dogs every day for about 6 hours.A couple of the dogs wore Garmen GPS collars and we averaged 13-14 miles of running a day and one day had 19 miles of hard, steady , pedal-to -the-metal chases. We were running 7 dogs; 5 of them are strickly kennel hounds and 2 of them are house beagles that lay on the couch and watch T.V. at night.Couldn't see any difference as the whole pack ran well together.
