Do you believe a house pet can be a good hunter?

Just curious on how many people believe a house broke beagle thats kept inside out of the elements can still perform as a quality hunter? I have a little female that turns one december 1st and she was the family pet. I have several others but she is the family favorite. She ran free all the time where I live in the middle of nowhere but she wandered off hunting and was hit by a car a nice older couple picked her up took her to the vet spent $170 on her and I finally found her after 10 days of searching. Paid the couple for the vet bill but while they had her they house broke her and I was going to keep her in the house the whole familys scared she'll wander off and get lost or hit again and they dont want her chained or penned. My delima is she was turning in to an exceptional hunter. Easily the fastest running beagle I've ever laid eyes on and she can handle the track with my older dogs all day long. Will housing her hurt her hunting instincts?

Nope, it's bred in them. Won't hurt a thing by keeping her in doors. She doesn't know the difference between a kennel or a your living room.

I personally don't believe it will hurt her one bit. I am not an expert by any means though. I have some that are indoor/outdoor. They are usually outdoors in the summer months and indoors in the winter months. I have heard people say that it will make them soft to the elements/weather. I have never had a problem with my dogs not wanting to go outside and or hunt. In fact I sometimes have a hard time letting them go out to do there buisness because they want to go hunting out back and this is in the nasty weather. I sometimes get frustrated because I am ready to get back inside but have to wait or track them down. ( I have since wised up and put the e collars on them but it is still a pain to put them on them). I think they enjoy heading out for an all day hunt and then hanging out by the fire place after. Mine are not the hardest hunting dogs out there but it has not hurt there breed in desire to head out in any kind of weather to chase old mr. cottentail!

Keeping her in the house will not hurt a thing and in fact my add to her handling and sense of pleasing you as her owner.

Can only respond on what I've witnessed with my own. We have a three yr old female that's been in the house since she was 6 wks old. Easiest dog we had to house break. As far as hunting ability, she is the most well mannered hound we have. Easy to handle, listens very well and can flat smoke a rabbit. Last month she finished to a Grand Hunting Beagle Champion. This past weekend she certified as a Performance Pack Champion and finished to a Show Champion on the bench. Not bad for a house dog. What's even better, after a long day of running in a field trial or gun hunting, get home feed the kenneled hounds it time to relax in the recliner, she always right there laying right beside me wanting her head and ears rubbed. What better way to end the day!!!!!!!

ALL MINE ARE HOUSE PETS AND I WILL LINE THEM UP AGAINST ANYTHING IN THE COUNTRY. AND RUN ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY

I didnt think it would probably hurt her any. Didnt matter one way or the other she was staying in the house she's the family pet. I've got 5 coyote hounds and 9 beagles right now. Never let any of them in the house before now so didnt have any experience trying to hunt a house pet. Thanks for all the replies.

NO I wouldn't keep my hunting dog inside the house as a pet. NO I personally wouldn't do it. YES some people have great success with keeping their hunting dog as a inside pet. But I am willing to bet more people ruin their beagle keeping in the house than you think. Yeah some are lucky but alot ruin the dog for letting it stay in the house as a pet.

All my dogs are GUN-DOG's period. They stay out side live eat breathe rabbit hunting and thats all I want them to know. Nothing more.

Joeyman, it looks to me like ALOT of people have had great success keeping gundogs inside.

Out of 11 or 12 responses your's is the only negative comment. I'm curious as to what you base your statements:

Well like I said its just I personally wouldn't keep one in the house and thats just my opinion. There are how many board members on this forum and only 11 replied. And their are how many beaglers out there that don't even know about this forum? - just saying

if thats what anyone wants to do more power to you. I don't look down on that. If it works out great for you I'm very happy for you. I just don't see having a gun-dog in my house. I'd spoil it to much......
