My Beagles: How is the weather in Korea? What breed of rabbit dog do they use over there?

No Bull: Great post, Thanks. Beagles are my entire life. I have nothing else and I agree with everything you say. I often buy dogs from different pedigrees simply because I would like to see how they stack up. This little Reggie pup has been and is impressive. I hunt every day from 3 to 4 or maybe more, hours per day. Like you, I realize that I can never get my complete input out of a dog. Verily, that is why I made this post: to discuss with others how one might price a dog.

JL- I must agree also with you. I have given away many young dogs to young people just to peek their interest in the sport. I often run fox with my dogs so a dog has to have lots of moxy and want to stayed tuned in to the fox. This is hard to find in a beagle.

SrPatch: What the heck is a "bullchetter" and where can you go to buy one? (laugh)

The value of anything- horse, house, artwork or beagle- is "The amount a willing buyer will pay a willing seller'" Period.
It would be wonderful if we could always get out of a dog what we have invested in them in money, time, etc., but the world isn't always wonderful. I don't sell a lot of dogs, but I have seldom sold a dog and felt I got as much out of it as I put into it. I accept that as part of the deal- I don't expect to make money off my dogs. If I was in this as a business, it would be a different story, and my efforts would be in a different direction. I know of pet beagles being sold for over $300, and if I wanted to make money, I would try to emulate their business plan. I want to have beagles which please me. I want them to hunt the way I like, run the way I like and compete in trials the way I like. That's my goal, and it doesn't include making a profit. Don't get me wrong, if I have a dog you really, really like and are willing to pay me a big price for, I'll take it, but when a buyer and I agree on the price for a dog, we are establishing the value of that dog, and I ask no more than that. Willing seller, willing buyer. Deal done.

Weather here is similar to southern Ohio or Indiana.

There are NO rabbits here. They were wiped out in early to mid 90's by Rabbit Hemorragic Disease. Killed all the rabbits in Korea, China and nearly wiped them out of Austrailia.

Habbitat is pretty good here for rabbits and no preditors other than mink and very few hawks owls. Phesants do real well here living in the mountains but there is no hunting here. They have some pheasant hunting preserves but they are very expensive. $50 a bird type deals.

Bob

Why is the dog worth less in your state than in WV? Does the dog primarily run WV rabbits better than rabbits in your state? I thought game animals smelled alike in all states?

Just trying to figure out how a dog is worth double in one state and not your own state. If you feel the dog is worth twice your asking price, stand firm and list it as what you feel it's worth -- at the end of the day, you only need one buyer.

I guess for me, doesn't matter the state, the price is what I list a dog at...........Don't care what others think as all I need is one buyer, not 100.

Buckshot: that was a play on what the WV Beagler said about prices in his state. Just a funny sarcasm. Go back and read what WV said. I am now thinking about keeping her anyway. I've got a guy with another Reggie pup for sale, so I may buy it and keep two of them.

Bob,

I am not bashing the guy from WV at all. But in certain circles guys may pay that much. I live in WV and have a couple decent dogs. At times better than decent.
I have 750 in one female and she was worth that anywhere she came from. I think that is good price for a finished good hound. I am going to try a 2 year old tomorrow
doing maybe a little more than your female and the guy wants 450 for her. I am fine with that because she is of blood I really want. I do not think the pricing of dogs
here in WV is any different than anywhere else. I think your price is more than fair on her if you sell her. I know I am not paying 700-800 for a dog like her. That is what you
ask and that is my opinion. She is priced according to ability, age and breeding. That big mouth is a plus for me as well, I likem loud! If a guy from WV, Indiana, Michigan, or where
ever can get big money out of a dog more power too them. I will price my dogs according to what I value them at, as you have done with her.

Great BC, I agree 100%. Pricing a dog is a difficult process thus, this post. My point was only the thinking behind how guys do it.

Just a quick follow-up to all who responded to this post. Thank-you. I sold her to a man on trial and he loves her. I am glad for all the input but, I would not recommend this process for pricing. Some people did not like it.
