Need poochie medical advice!

Post by SwampBuck »

Ran my hounds today and 1 of my females foot got sliced pretty seriously. It is on her front paw behind the back pad and is about 1.5" long and its deep. Its a clean slice. I cleaned it out nicely, put in some neosporin and put 3-4 butterflies to close the wound, then bandaged it, and wrapped it. I am giving her anti biotics for a week also. I am unbandaging her tomorrow night and checking everything and re butterflying it if needed. Am I doing evrything correctly? anything I am missing? Im not gonna run her for at least a month either.

Sounds like you are doing a good job caring for it. Keeping it clean and giving the antibiotics are the key. It will heal faster unwrapped. Of course, that is a catch 22 in a dirty environment. If she is in an above ground kennel, I would prefer leaving it open. How are you keeping her from biting the bandage off to lick it? The butterflies are a good idea. If I catch a deep but clean cut soon enough, I superglue it shut. If it is the least bit dirty, I treat it as an "open wound" instead since you never want to foreign matter or germs in a wound. Good luck!

Chuck is right on as usual!

I would inspect it for infection, then reclean it as best I could with high pressure water from a house faucet, not a fire hose.Lol

Then add a sulphur based cream like Udder Butter deep down and some Chap-guard Plus Udder Cream to whatever is showing near to the surface. Remove the butterflies and close with superglue. Don't hurt if you get it all over the bottom of the foot, don't be neat. Super glue is much better to keep it closed than the butterflies and you won't have to wrap it. Let her lick it , that is good for it.

I've done this and taken them back out hunting the next day. Simply repeated this when I got home.
