Doc and anyone else that might know,
I recently bought a puppy and in looking for the right puppy food to feed her,I came across an interesting question. Can you feed to much protien? The puppy was started out on puppy chow and Black Gold.In my area,we do not have Black Gold but we do have puppy chow.I feed Diamond Premium to my older dogs but for the puppy,I bought a bag of Diamond puppy food with 31 % protien and 20%fat.I am feeding it dry and her stool still seams a little soft and runny.I have been feeding it for two weeks now. Also,Someone told me that to much protien can cause hot spots.Does anyone else know of this.?Changing her diet is not a problem,if I have to,except for the knowledge of what to feed that will suit her better. From reading the lable on the Diamond puppy food though,it does look just as good,if not better, then anything else out there. What do you think?...Thanks much.....Ray

Iams supports HSUS which is anti everything us hunters do. You can buy it, yes it is good food, but you will be supporting the people that are trying to take away everything we run beagles for.

i was feeding diamond.. it only took one bag for me to change my mind and go back to purina.. when i got my first pup it was fed purina till i got it i changed it over slow but its stool stayed loose and would not fall through the flooring.. I gave it awhile with no improvement. so I switched back to purina and I have alot less waste to clean up and it comes out firm and goes through the flooring well.. just my two cents..remember when changing puppy food to do it slow mix in alittle then more till its full power

Soft stool, in an otherwise healthy, active dog (puppy or adult) could be a sign of overfeeding. It could also be that the food is not agreeing with your dog.
31% is not to much for a puppy, but you really need to be careful that you don't let her grow too fast, as developmental bone disorders (such as Pano and HOD) can occur.
Actully, she would be fine with a food that was, say, 26% or so. Also, feed smaller meals more often so she can digest and absorb the available nutrients. If you feed to large of an amount at one time, they will gorge themselves which makes it harder for them to digest, thus causing diarrhea (or soft pudding poos). Puppies should get 3 feedings a day until 3 months or so, then 2 feedings until growth slows (approximately 8 months).
