how many males ?
my question is similar to blckcrk-dog...i have a 10x10 and 4 5x10s. i have one female in each 5x10 and i have 3 males in the 10x10 but im gettin another male. would it be ok to have 4 males in that 10x10. the kennels are cleaned once a day and sometimes twice a day and we run all of them almost every weekend and even almost every afternoon after school so the dogs get plenty exercise and have super clean pens almost 24-7
Re: how many males ?
I wouldn't put 4 dogs in a 10 X 10 personally, that doesn't give them much room.
Re: how many males ?
I think thats more than enough room. If you are runnin them all they are gonna do is lay around anyways. The kennel is just a place for them to eat and sleep not excercise. I'd put 4 dogs in a 5x10 myself.

your asking for trouble when you are least expecting it there is going to be a fight and they will all jump on the one that goes down and it is going to be nasty, plus that is way to many in a 10x10 each dog needs at least 5x10 to its self.

2 dogs max in a 5x10. I only double them in the cold months. How would you feel being in a 10x10 pen with 4 other guys?

I was wondering the same thing about putting another male in with the 2 I have in a 6 by 12. My biggest fear is a nasty kennel war the 2 I have in there now get along great

Re: how many males ?
If I didn't have another option I would rather keep the females in one pen and seperate the males. It' always best to keep them all seperated if you can. They can get better rest that way.

"The humanization of animals", I love it!
I wonder, if I were only 15" tall how big a 10' X 10' enclosure would seem to me?
I wonder, if I were a hound who loved being amongst my own kind and had a pack nature and instinct, would I really care if we slept 4 to-a-bed?
I think the only variable to the problem of pen size is, do you ever get them out of the pen. Hounds are typically lazy in kennels, it is their safe place/den area. If hounds are let out to air each day and hunted or exercised with some regularity, it prevents boredom which breed corruption in kennels.
One fellow keeps 4 dogs in a 8 X 12 kennel. It takes them about 3 min. to eat the ration(no food is ever left in kennels to be fought over) he stand over them as they eat and removes the pan when they're done. After they've eaten, they are let out to air in the fenced lot while kennels are cleaned and left to dry. They romp in the lot and empty out, then, are returned to kennels for the night. Afterward, he takes a rake and picks up droppings and chucks them onto a burn pile to keep any worm eggs that may be in the stool from contaminating the soil of the fenced in lot. This bit if air prevents the boredom and gives them some routine to their daily lives until they can be taken out for exercise or a hunt on days off. It seems to be all they need to be kept happy hounds...

Re: how many males ?
Lots of males get aggresive, fight, or get boastful especially if a female is around and even more so if one is around in heat.
"Same as when we men were younger"!!!
I don't understand why we beaglers don't castrate our males just like we do our horses and all other farm animals we don't plan to breed. It doesn't take but a few seconds and a glob of medicine you can carry in your truck. Several do that here and then go to a top stud somewhere to breed their females.
Sure makes a group of gentlemen out of a pen full of males!
