Grandparents are evil! I am a parent of an 11 year old and a 7 year old and I am old enough to be the grandfather of both. I can tell you, Bev, that when you spoil a grandchild and then send him/her back to the parents, they beat the crap out of the kid! Yeah, bring mine back from Granny and Peepaw and let the beatings begin!!!
Just kidding, a hammer gun needs a lot of practice and still with gloves on, it is tricky for young hands. BUT--a single shot teaches a very valuable lesson about clean kills.

Re: Help on first gun for son
I would go with this new gun that came out 4 years ago. This is what I used and an outstanded gun.New England single shot 204.Its takes one bullet at a time and for a kid I think that all he needs .But I never had a 243 sound like a good gun.But the 30 0 06 is a littls big I ve got one of them too.I don t know I just like that single shot for a kid were he has to pull the hammer back to shoot it and that one shot,he will grow up to be a better shot.
Re: Help on first gun for son
I have a 13 yr old brother that shots a savage .243 he loves it. He as killed several deer with it. Not only is the savage a good accurate gun its price is easy on the wallet.
Re: Help on first gun for son
cant use a rifle on deer around where i live so i got that mossberg youth the guy earlier ,was talking about for when he is old enuff to hunt rabbits lol but looks like im gonna need another one,i love that little 20 gauge 8). for deer huntin my boy will prolly learn on my muzzleloader(excuse to get myself a new one ) 8).
Re: Help on first gun for son
I would suggest a .270. They can be toned down for less recoil or pump up the ammo for hard hitting stopping power. My wife shoots a .270 and she is 105lbs. Most 13 year old boys would be bigger then her.
I like the .270 cause u can drop almost anything in north america with it. I use mine for deer, bear, moose, wolves, yotes, ground hogs and the list goes on. There is such a variety of ammo loads and bullet size that u cant go wrong. They are not my first choice for a "bush" gun. If u are dogging in the bush they have a bad tendicy to ricociet off of branches leaves u name it, they are a very fast shooting gun. But for long range or moderate brush(with a clean shot) they are awesome. My longest kill with mine to date was 455 yards on the range finder on a fox. I can consitatly shoot 500 yards at the gravel pit at a 8" pie plate. Id be getting my son a .270. OR ask him would he would like get him to do some research on his own.
