Young Pups....How do you guys go about basic training

Post by Joeyman »

i've been working with my young pup here pretty much every day. I let her follow me around the yard and play with her. Still working on her coming when I call her name. But she is still young for that. She'll come when I give a few whistles if she's at a distance from me. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.......lol

She is still way to small to leash her so she has free range right now. The collars I have are to big for her. And one of them is pretty small. Her neck is so tiny

I've also been playing the hotdog game with her. She loves this. About a couple times a week I'll drag a piece of hotdog thru the yard about 10ft or so sometimes more depends how far i want to drag it.....lol I call her over to the area and yell out get it get it get it she goes nuts over it.......lmao she tracks it fairly well not very very accurate shes just a pup born May 10th. But she finds it everytime and gobbles it down then searches like crazy for another.

Trying to get ideas on what others do with their young pups. I think its fun to play with them and teach them things. Any other suggestions?

Well wat i do with my pups is at 8 weeks i let them play around with one of my smaller swamp rabbits in the yard. The pups usually have alot of fun playin with it and i only let them do this for about 20-30 min every day till they are 10 weeks old. Once the pups are 10 weeks i dont let them see the rabbit again till 12 weeks. At 12 weeks i put the pups in a pen that is about 80ft by 80ft. This pen has a little patch of grass about knee-high in the center of it that is probably 30ft around and i keep a rabbit in here at all times. Ill put the pup or pups in the pen and usually one of them picks up on that familiar scent and manages to find the rabbit and they'll chase it around for a little while. I do this about 2-3 times a week till the pups reach 14 weeks. I keep the pups in their pens most of the time between 14-16 weeks but when they turn 16 weeks (4 months) they go in a starting pen (I've been using a friend of mine's starting pen but now i have my own and it has great cover and is perfect for starting pups). I'll put the pups in the starting pen every day till they are 6 months then when i take them out of the running pen and when the pups reach 8 months i let'em loose in the wild with my older hounds and it wont be no time till you got you some more hounds that will do what you want and that is to run the hair off that rabbit.

I let the Kids play with them till their about 10 weeks and then I start them in the small starting pen. I let the kids play with them for as long as they want it helps to socialize them and I think it helps them handle better. Kids do wonders for a pup.

i really want to try another place that I know of but not sure how it really is we could go there and waste a day U know. i hate doing that. we already know that their are a ton of rabbits at my main spots.

farm = we'll stay on the right side of the property. forget going up the hill. Besides your dad was seeing things run the the fields........lmao that was hilarious.
