Re: Selling Dogs
Thanks to all your boys for your responses. Human nature is a funny thing to wrap your mind around. There are those who believe in things that are just "meant to be". Maybe it is meant to be that I should keep this pup and I should not question it. I'm beginning to come around to this way of thinking. I'll give it another couple days and give in to this philosophy. My wife and I have a perfectly worthless cat but I rationalize the keeping of it by saying that maybe it is meant to save our lives someday or something.

Follow-up. The power of the internet. I talked to a gentleman from Indiana today at great length and pleasure. He thought this dog was for sale but I informed him it could not be bought but was FREE and with free trial. He called back later and said he was on his way to pick him up. Great! I asked him to be so kind as to keep me informed of his (the dog) progression. He said he would. I am most happy.
Re: Selling Dogs
One of the best hounds in my kennel came from a very good friend. He advertised the hound for sale here at a very reasonable price given his ability, bloodline and potential to throw tough hounds. A guy called and threw off on the hound because of the price then tried to get him to sell the hound cheaper! Not knowing what had happened, I called my friend and asked why he was selling such a quality hound. It turns out that he was working 6 days a week and his father, who keeps his hounds run up, had injured his knee and was unable to run them as they needed and he was thinning out. Long story short, he told me to come and get the hound if i wanted him because he would rather give him to me than sell him to someone who would just turn around and make a buck from him and never let him have a stable home. Good friend, good hound, priceless!

DRamey":
Great story. More people should do the same. My Philosophy has always been that, if you do not have time to run a beagle, get a poodle or a duck. Beagles are hounds and they were developed to be active and pursue game.

Re: Selling Dogs
Have any of yall ever read my for sale post when I cull... You get the truth the best I can tell you. I am usualy harder on my hounds than anyone. Anyone who buys one will tell you I shot it straight. If I see a fault I will tell it.. you gonna find out when you run it.
Just the way I do it.

Dave G., Anytime, you are welcome. I run all the time with anyone that can be bothered with my culls. I am in Stockbridge which is south of Lansing. Don't think I am too far from you according to Chuck R. I run simply to get the best possible dogs I can. I never kill a rabbit. I'll throw a little pistol lead at one once in a while but hope they live to run again.

Re: Selling Dogs
the trouble i have when it comes to selling one of my hounds,is i haven't met or been around alot of guys who have who have quality hounds and years of experience.i mainly just gun hunt with several friends with about the same caliber dogs.i have been to a couple ukc trails and the dogs i've seen were nice dogs, but nothing outstanding(registered class).really didn't have enough time to truly see what the dogs could do.so therefore i really dont know how to rate my dogs for a sale.what i think might be good line control, speed and check, might be average.what i think might be average might not even be that.so i hate to have a person travel to see a hound when it might not be even in their ball park.
i just thought maybe some of the gun hunters might have this problem also.
p.s. i do have one hbch that is an all around nice hound, and several others that might lack one quality of being the same type dog. also i don't have any trash runners ,backtrackers,or mouthy dogs so they are not culls.
thanks

Re: Selling Dogs
Bob is straight up, he wont BS u.
It's hard to get ride of a decent hound. travel time, fuel, and the hope the guys isnt full of it when u get there. guys are chasing the big name hounds and forgetting what got them into beagling. a solid hound that can run a rabbit in any condition.
bob i hope all is well. talk to u soon.

Re: Selling Dogs
Thanks Bill,
There is an interesting side note to this whole experiment. A family from Indiana called as I have previously noted and wanted to come get this pup. It was a 4 hour drive and they said they did it because of the conversation we had on the phone. I promised them they would be satisfied. No, not promised, I guaranteed it.
Anyway, they drove up here and got him, took him home and the husband tried him out the next day in 86 degree heat. He said he soloed him for a couple hours and he ran rabbits like he hoped he would. I explained that this dog was only 14 months old and he would get better. He thought he was good enough already. He like him so much, indeed, he said he would be back up here in a couple weeks to purchase an older dog I have to go with him.
A happy ending and a good home for the pup.
