Selling Dogs

Post by bucks better beagles »

There has been much discussion on this site about this issue. I find that when I try to sell one, it is more of a problem than an answer. Everyone expects perfection at a very small price. No offense intended here because I have met many very nice people but some that were not real dependable. Granted, I do not have great pedigrees but they are pretty good hounds anyway and they were priced reasonable. As an experiment, I have posted a real nice young dog "FREE" with a FREE TRIAL offer also. You might want to check it out and let me know if you think this method will work to place dogs and reduce kennel size.

I always thought that the dog sells itself. In this case, I will guarantee it.

I did see your ad on Beaglesforsale site. My first impression was, somebody ought to jump on that. My second thought was , if it's to good to be true, then it probably is.
Selling a good hound is know different then anything else, people want something for nothing, they want Grand Champions for 150.00 bucks. Check the wanted section of that same site, you'll see what i mean. Good buddy.

Hay Charley, looking forward to seeing you. This is not a cull or throw away, I just don't need him. Most people are probably like "run and gun": My first impression was, somebody ought to jump on that. My second thought was , if it's to good to be true, then it probably is." Lordy, I didn't try to make him sound better than he is. Curious though, what does anyone have to lose? If one is looking for a young hound, why not try one like this? No obligation and free trial.

That's why I put this thread on here. I know a lot of serious hunters have been in this position. Usually, it is with dogs that are oversized or just don't meet up with their trialing needs. I have acquired some in this manner myself. I got them because they knew I would put them in the woods and give them a good home.

Charley, how about considering a trip up to Harrison to run them shoes for a while?

To me it's like everything else............you have to weed through the bad to get to the good. Sometimes it's weeding through bad dogs and sometimes it's dealing with unreasonable people. I just listed a pup for free that I have for basically 2 reasons......... 1. I'm having trouble breaking him from barking in the kennel. It's not constant or anything like that but it's enough that it irritates me. And 2. He is wanting to be a late starter (IMO) and I already have 4 other started pups.

All I can figure is the best you can do is be honest and fair and the rest of the chips fall where they may.

Bunnyblaster....That is exactly the way I look at it. This is an experiment for me. A buddy of mine called and said, "the price is too high on that dog. You should pay the cost of gas for someone to come and try him". You know, I am considering doing just that. Better yet, if a person tries him and doesn't like him, I could buy them a meal or something. I don't think under these circumstances one could call me a "dog jockey" or a "puppy mill". Or could one?

I have a grandson out of Ranger Dan that I am also considering giving away. But since he is well bred, I would probably have to pay more to get someone to take him. (joke)

Thanks Flinger,: You are right about what you say. When I was a kid, I had a man give me $10 to take a dog off his hands because he was a deer runner. This was big money to me 50 years ago (I was 13). I managed to break that dog and he became perhaps, the best I ever owned.

How far down in Ohio are you? Maybe we could meet somewhere? I would deliver him all the way but my truck is just about as rickety as I am.

Buck ,you know ,if I drive 800 mi to see ya I`ll drive another 2hrs to run hare. I`m wanting to see if these junk yard dogs can handle a hare any better than they do a cotton tail.

I am going to get with Dave G from Lapeer, the gent that bought Hondo. Was in SC a while back tryin to run blue tail, rabbit came out of the weeds up the dirt road turned back in the weeds in frony of us,dogs came out went right past us and never slowed down, they was lookin at each other and ran 3o ft up the road runnin their mouths,I let one o them fox hound war whoops out ,that ended the bull crap, came back found the bunnie and ran it.

I gave the dog that was causen all the problems away. Funny how dogs will do things when they aren`t supposed to. Oh well hope it didn`t discourage the young man from gettin PATCH BLOOD.

Cairn, You know, I think you may have something there. I tried to sell a dog once for $200 and he was a pretty darn good dog. Nobody wanted him. One day a guy told me that a dog that was priced that cheap can't be any good. I raised the price to $400 and sold him in 3 days.

Charley: We could take Dave G. with us if all works out well. Course, there are lots of good running rabbits now over at the old Miller place on Cassidy Rd. Lots of room and no traffic.

Getting excited just thinking about them Patch dogs.

Bob
There have been some very good dogs given away or sold very cheap on this board.
I remember a couple years ago Larry G. put a Show bred dual purpose male on here, and most people looked at it as something wrong with it. All Larry was doing was moving a very well bred hound that he already used in his breeding program and was moving on. Honey Pots Hounds(Cindy) jumped on it and later Championed him out in the AKC Show ring.
I have seen several others that owners had to make room or gave up on a pup and was a late starter that later became one heck of a rabbit hound. Sometimes a change of eniviroment makes a big difference.
Bob I think your doing it the right way, because if they Trial him they will know alot more about what they are getting.
You never know unless you give him a chance!
I'll keep My GOD, MY Freedom, My Guns, and My Money! You can keep the "CHANGE".
