my little 13" striker-branko female had 12 yesterday, 1 was born dead. Me and my wife were up all night with em. Be hard to raise all of them as she is a little dog. I got some Hartz milk replacer, we brought 5 in and left the other 6 on her for about an hour and then switched them trying to get all on the mother first , then we started supplementing with the hartz. Today all are alive but 1 is weak, i always dreaded big litters like this.
lets hear your experience with big litters, what you do to save em and so on

My experience is the weak ones usually die in large litters. I have read where certain birg dog breeders cull a few in real large litters and get down to an amount that the mother will be able to feed comfortably.

Sounds like your doing the right thing . The first 3 days are critical.Supplemental feeding surely won't hurt them.Just don't overfeed them ;you can get milk in their lungs.

We have taken time to let the smaller ones have some time to nurse by themselves without the larger one knocking them off. I have seen some of the biggest pups not even look for a nipple, just look for another pup nursing and knock him off. It seems the little ones just get pushed around.

if you can get some newborn milk supplement give some to the mama and some to the puppies but make sure they get at least 3 days of mamas milk to get the colstrum they need ,I wish you good luck ,also if you know anybody that has a female with milk you can get her to foster by putting a towell or small stuffed animal with your pups for a couple of hours and put it with the foster mama dog for a couple of hours and she should take the pups,I had a lab do this one time for me when the mama beagle died after nursing pups for a week she had 13 and died a week later from one pup still in her and infection set in ,good luck. the brand of supplement is called newborn.

I had a Yellow Creek female that had 13 {11 made it}, 11 {11 made it} and 12 {10 made it}. The last litter she developed an infection after the pups were born, which is common in extra large litters. I have had the best luck with "Save-A-Kid", you can buy it at almost any Co-op or Tractor Supply. https://www.americanlivestock.com/pm-78 ... a-kid.aspx I used Save-A-Kid on the pups and fed it to the mother in her wet feed. Also I fed the highest protein feed I could find to the mother {Diamond Natural Extreme Athlete 32% protein & 25% fat http://www.diamondpet.com/products/diam ... e_athlete/ }. If she gets an infection, the pups while sucking her will be poisoned by the fluids that she releases, along with the infection hurting her milk production. Find "Fish Mox". It is "amoxicillin" http://www.amazon.com/Fish-Mox-Amoxicil ... B0002YF9UA Two tablets a day for three days wipes out anything, and you can use it on nursing females, where it is not good to use penicillin while nursing. Some dogs react badly to penicillin anyways. It has worked for us, for years. Good Luck and congratulations.cotton buster 404 wrote:my little 13" striker-branko female had 12 yesterday, 1 was born dead. Me and my wife were up all night with em. take a big pot and fill it up with chicken QT's,cook up as you would a gumbo and feed moma dog.Cook a big pot of rice.Mix the gumbo with juice over rice, stir up good and keep a big pan out for moma dog.Salt the gumbo just like you would to taste for humans. The Mojo in this mixture is the salt and chicken broth - moisture...This has worked in the bayou country ,more than once.

I just had a litter of ten. Two were born really weak... we took them and warmed them and bottle fed them for an hour or so. All then survived and are doing great. They've been off momma' for about a week now and eating Diamond Puppy food up. Momma was happy to quit feeding!
