kennel lights

Post by nb11 »

What do you guys use to cover/protect the heat lights inside the boxes? I have a chewer. I have an above ground kennel with wire mesh covering the lights in the boxes. The other day I went out to feed the dogs and she had the wire mesh ripped out of her box and it was laying in the run. Sorta frustrating. I've tried soup cans before, but they didn't last as long as this wire mesh. If there is a cheap, homemade option...I'd prefer it to a product I have to buy and pay through the nose for. I'm in the process of building a new kennel, too. Whatever I do, I have to do in the new and old kennel both.
thanks

I use vapor tight fixtures out of old walk in coolers. The fixture is sealed by a heavy duty glass screw on jar that you can see the bulb through but a hound can do nothing with it. If your bulb goes out you unscrew the glass jar replace the bulb and screw the jar back on. Most walk in coolers now use flourescents so the old jars are throw aways and can be got cheap from most commercial electrical contractors.

I put the light under the dog box to heat the floor (heat goes up). The dogs cannot reach them as they are under (outside) of the kennel.
