Sore on Dog

I have a male puppy that is about 7 months old. A few days ago I noticed a place on his neck. It was about as big around as a pencil. I think it was where a tick had been on him. I went out there yesterday and noticed that the sore was a little bigger than a half dollar, and all the hair fell out on it. It does not look too good. It might be running a little bit. It is humped up a little and I noticed it felt kind of hard. I have been boiling it out with peroxide and putting a gell I had for horses on it. Oh yea, This dogs coat don't appear the same as all of my other beagles. My other beagles coats are slick and shiney. The pups coat looks a little dull. All of my dogs are fat and healthy, with no fleas or ticks on them. Well they might get one every now and again. He has began to try and scratch it this morning. Before, he acted like it did not bother him. So it is healing or getting worse. I was wondering if anyone knew what that was and how I can treat it.

Where are you? Sounds like a BOT FLY to me. Is it open at the top. If so , even more it sounds like a BOT. They love horses and cattle, but do get in a dog occasionally.

It is not open at the top. It don't have no scab or anything. It just looks like a big sore. I looked this morning and it might be getting a scab on it towards the center.

Bot fly or warble fly. We call them "wolves" here, really common in squirrels early in the season. I have killed several squirrels in August and as they cooled the larva crawls out, nastiest thing I ever saw. If it is one of these parasites, it probably isn't life threatening but I wouldn't want it to mature in my hound's neck (most common place, by the way). I have seen them eat their way out of cats when they are ready to go from worm to fly and they leave a nasty looking hole. I have heard of people around here, old timers, cutting them out with a sharp Case XX, but I don't have the nerve. If it isn't confirmed to be a fly larva, would do more harm than good. See a vet.

i have killed squirells with 4 or 5 of them wolves all around their head ya talking bout something nasty looking i have skinned squrills with maybe one on their sides that thing is just under the skin not actually in the meat i never ate one like that though always throw them away but i know guys that will skin n eat them no matter how many were on the squirell nasty nasty jb

Lots on here will try to help you, but, you don't give enough information. Is it red anywhere and if so, is it red all over or just red in a circle? Open anywhere? How old is pup? Where hair is out, is there scabs, or sore pieces like abrasions or lumps or is it just out and the skin smooth? Tell us what you are seeing! Does the pup eat well? Hold its head funny or different in any way? Is its neck sore to the touch?

Ramey, we call them Wolves here too, even the ones that look like Bot Fly larvae but are from the screw worm. Both do the same thing. They even get in a human every now and then.
Cut your finger, let it bleed in the opening of the Volf and it will come way out to get more of it. catch it with tweezers and help it come on out. Or, cover the hole with camphorated oil and it will come out. That
is what we use for Horses.

I'd guess once the tick made the sore it opened and the flies are eatting on it.
I got three hounds the flies are about to put ventalations holes in their ears. Put the horse "fly repel" on them. The flies always bite hardest before a rain...and now the rain has come, hounds are wet, it only draws them more.

I noticed today that it looked like the hair was trying to grow back. I believe that it was a bot fly. The more I look at it, the more it resembles one. It is on the back of his neck between his shoulder blades. The peroxide and FURA-ZONE must have done the trick. As much medicen that I was putting on it, no worm is going to stay in there. It was not effecting him at all. I actually have still been running him a few days a week. It started out that the sore was just dried skin and then a layer of skin came off when I started doctoring it and it is now pretty much just raw. They're is no hole in it or anything. I think what happened was, when I started doctoring it, it made that layer of skin come off and expose the bot eggs. And the other times after that just killed the eggs. The stuff I use is an anti-bacterial medication. I am still keeping my fingers crossed that they don't come back. I don't see how anyone can not take care of an animal. This is just a little sore and it is driving me crazy.
