Roofing Material Question...

I am putting together some kennels and will be constructing a metal frame (using 1-5/8" top rail) for the roof structure.
I had intended on using fiberglass roof panels or perhaps the painted metal roofing like you buy @ depot.

My challenge is that I am intending on moving in the next cpl years so the kennels are not going to be a permanant fixture
to this yard (in a residantial neighborhood). I am designing it so that they can easily be taken apart and moved to new
location... leaving the pea gravel foundation for what ever the new owner to do with as he see fit.

I am putting the gravel in this evening and will post pics afterward so that some of you can get the idea of what I am doing.

QUESTION : have any of you ever used the fiberglass panels? I see by the pics in this forum most are shingle roofs... but
that is not an option if the desire is to be able to disassenble them...

U wanting above ground or ground kennels?

make you a couple above ground cheap and easy out of 2x4's since you r going to be moving in a couple years. Tear them down when you move and throw them away or make em 4ft wide by 8ft long they'll fit in the back of a pick up truck easy for hauling to your new home.

not real fond of the above ground... currently I have three 57"x10' kennerls and will add the fourth.. attach them together with chainlink brackets to make one long run...

not real sure maybe build the roof in sections bolt together so you can take it down later.

It would be nice to draw it all up on the computer but I have no idea what you are looking to build. Could draw it all in 3D and see what it looks like then build.

This is where I am with the kennels after the pea gravel was put in the bed last night... I am going to use top rail attached to the kennels with brackets
to construct a metal frame at the top whict will support the roofing material. If you look at the slope roof option from the optionplus http://www.optionspluskennels.com/hardroof.htm you will get the idea of what I am going to accomplish.

so should I use metal barn tin or the fiberglass panels (filon). I was thinking of the fiberglass as it MAY be cooler... should not resinate heat like
the tin would...

Hi;

I have a kennel system similar to yours. I used metal roofing over bifold insulation, stays cool underneath. Also I fastened my metal down with the screws with rubber washers, that way the panels can be numbered and removed if need be.

I think you will find that the fiberglass panels will not last very long and will become brittle in cold temps. You will be a lot more satisfied with metal roofing. JMO

The old 10x20 chainlink kennel we used to have. we just run 2x4's across the top, & wired them down to the top of the kennel with heavy wire. Then we just screwed barn tin down to the 2x4's. I used 12 ft 2x4's & 12 ft barn tin so I had a foot overhang on each side. I left a space between each sheet of tin, mainly to save a couple of bucks. The open spaces might have kept it from becoming a huge kite in high wind. We had some nasty, windy storms here, & the roof held up fine. It was super easy to take down. It worked good, but it wasn't much on looks.

Bifold insulation is a foam type insulation with a plastic covering on both sides. It comes in a about 3 x 50 x 3/8 inch piece folded in a package about 3x3. Hence the name bi fold. I bough mine at the same place that I bought my tin but I have seen it at LOWES also. Really helps insulate anything below the tin and helps underneath stay cool.

I am all over it!!! needing to get the roof on here... have a young blutick nursing about an hour and half from here... six weeks or so I bring her home.
then October hopefully off to Ohio to see Tim H and get me a lil woodpint female... gotta love it!!!!

I really like your roof setup that exactly what I want to do to mine, since I am in the same boat w/ planning on moving in a couple of years. I have all the metal roofing, but where did you purchase the top rail and connectors to attach to your fence? Can you post some better close up pics. Thanks.

I purchased the rail end brackets at lowes... depot does not carry them. the insulation board was from lowes as well.
I have just finisehd wrapping the entire structure with ploy tarp and have a tarp attached to fron that will roll down
for when snow and ice blows in... the poly tarp around the sides and back keep the cold wind from cutting thru.

I have built Kennel boxes for each... I will post pics this weekend... I think I xcan finally say that I am finished with
this project... and just in time for winter.
