Tom and Back 40, I guess I should have known that, and after asking the question of course I recalled the obvious. We only kept a few Jerseys and they didn't require stanchions for milking, but I can see how you'd want to dock the tails on a larger operation. Still, I don't recall ever seeing a docked tail around these parts, but then, we Mainers are tough! LOL

Big Dog, if you go to the vet and get its tail cut do not run the dog for four weeks. I tried to run mine after two weeks with the tail bandaged. The bandage came off and the skin that was stitched together came apart. Therefore i had to go back to the vet and have more of his tail cut off. You may also need what looks like a lamp shade to go around the dogs head to keep it from licking and chewing its tail. Living in the south and running rabbits in the blackberry bushes and monkey briars will play havoc on a good jump dogs tail. Every pup that i keep has its tail docked at three days old. I also have a banding tool and i think it does better than going to the vet. If you can get down to Georgetown i will put the band on your dogs tail for nothing and let you run your dogs and my patches and shake rags on some swamp rabbits. Larry Parrott

To John - I have to do something she is bleeding like a stuck pig everytime I take her out, and I think it is going to get infected pretty soon. It isn't like the normal bleeding you get on a dogs tail it is a lot worse and it isn't getting hard the tail looks like jelly. I am probably going to take her to the vet and have about 3 inches taken off. She will champion out in the field one day I'm sure, but she would never have a shot at being a bench champion.(LOL)

I have never doc'd a pups tail before.

Explain how this is done.

I don't worry about bench champs much either.LOL

I'm gonna doc the tail on my next litter.

To Rob- She is only 11 months old now, I am going to run her hard this spring and summer and she should be tough for sure then. She already has a full gun season under her belt. I killed 50 rabbits in front of her this year.

Thats great big dog.

If you can get some gunning over them that first year it sure gives you confidence that they are gonna be worth feeding all summer.

I have a young one about 9 months old and this snow had me at a stand still with him untill last week.

I'm considering taking him down to that Dale guys place to get some quality running on him. Will he run him in a small pack of 2 or 3 dogs?

Dale will run him however you want. I always make a special request that he not run my dog with any more than 2 other dogs at a time. He seems to honor it, because the ones that I have sent to him did not come back wild and crazy, but they did come back fit and trim and hard as a rock.

Big Dog, not to say that Vet's don't have their place, they do, but don't waste your money on it this time. I too was hesitant about using the band. I had a dog with a real beat up tail this past fall. One of our old time beaglers banded it for me. The tail fell took about two weeks to fall off, it just came off one day on it's own when I was running him. It works great and he has not had a problem since.

Just slide it down to where you want it and then pull as much hair back as you can over the band. That way, when the tail falls off the hair will cover it and it will help to protect the tail while it heals. It will also look better too as you won't even be able to tell the tail was docked. You don't have to worry about taking the band off or sniping the dead part of the tail off, they will both fall off on their own.

Robert, as far as puppies tails go. I take a razor blade and dock them at three days old when I do the dew claws. I take the tail and run it along the hock until it comes to the elbow on the back leg. It may not look like you are taking much off, but believe me it is plenty, it's easy to get carried away and take too much. When I do the tails they seem to bleed quite a bit. My vet sells me silver nitrate real cheap. You just rub the silver nitrate in the cut and it clots the bleeding. You can also buy silver nitrate through the various catalogs, but in my case it is cheaper getting it through my vet. Best of luck...Steve.

Robert, i do it the same way Slaux does but i don`t use silver nitrate. If you use one small drop of super glue it will stop the bleeding. Also sterilize the razor before cutting the tail. Larry Parrott
