Is there a point of saturation?
I've been watching these boards for some time now and would ask your opinion. Is there a point where big name stud dogs over saturate the market and both stud service and pups lose value. I have seen this happen with a few. Big name studs with so much off spring the pups are going for near nothing, or in one case couldn't be sold and was gave away. What do you think?

There is always a demand for good dogs, and a new generation of suckers born every year to absorb the culls.

Supply and demand will dictate who pays what for a stud fee or a pup.If there is a pre-potent reproducing stud available I would think everyone and their brother would / should be breeding every topnotch bitch they have to him.Would anyone think that too many bitches were bred to Dingus Macrae,Branko's Jack Of All Trades,Maravic's Blue Ninja,Branko's Heli-Prop,Branko's Ali-Baba,Mt. Zion Pete, etc.?

Re: Is there a point of saturation?
I have a VERY nice female from a big name stud,I have another female from a well known stud [he is a littermate to the big name stud ] and I've just reserved a pup sired by the big name stud out of an older bitch that goes back top and bottom to a VERY big name stud that is now deceased but is basically a legend in the beagling world. My kennel is basically saturated with hounds bred this way because I like them so much.
Now who is "amost giving them away and selling them for almost nothing"? I'm still paying top dollar for the ones I buy and getting top dollar for the ones I sell.
What folks need to figure out,is the stud a "big name" because he's a big winner in competition or owned by someone that has deep pockets and is a real promoter of his hound or is he a "big name" because he is a superior specimen and reproduces a high percentage of pups with those same traits he possesses?

Re: Is there a point of saturation?
A dog who has won in the field trails will sell more pups than the back yard breeder who has a dog that is just as good. " If he isn't put before the public who is going to know" Advertising sells that's a fact. The biggest problem is that there are to many people with females breeding them and they shouldn't. This is what saturates the market with inferior dogs. Sometimes this hurts the big name stud dog and his reputation because the breeder wanted to make a quick buck or is hopeful he can get at least one good dog. A breeding should be done for the sole purpose of trying to improve the breed and if it doesn't work then culling hard is what should take place. It not easy but a necessary practice!!
Re: Is there a point of saturation?
I think the breeding thing has gotten way out of hand. This week a women was busted locally for not paying taxes on her sell of dogs. They came in and took 240 dogs mostly small lap dog types. The conditions of kennels the paper said was really nasty. Easy mony if you dont take care of them with any responsibility. I sincerely think some believe if the female comes in they should breed her. Good bred dogs will always sell good especially ones with respectable perfomance records but for every one of them many more or bred hoping for a good one.
Re: Is there a point of saturation?
I guess it depends on the value you place on your dogs. I have a limit on what I'll pay for a puppy no matter what the breeding. I think people use the dog's name to try to command a higher price for the puppies. Just because the sire is a big name hound doesn't mean the dam adds anything to bettering the breed.

JPritch,
Are you saying that some stud dog owners are more interested in stud fees than breeding to good gyps? Here is another question. Is this where brood gyps and females that may have never ran a rabbit become puppy factories?

To be honest I would say a lot of breeders are in it for the money with the hopes that another champion may be born other wise why charge a fee to take that chance? It's like being a consultant; I might have the information but you have to buy it to see if it fits your needs! Now I'm not saying all breeders fall into this category but I'll bet most will breed to any female when the owner brings the cash? " How can dog sire hundreds or in some cases thousands of pups without this being an influencing factor? If there are those out there that will flat turn a prospective client away because they didn't like the cross then I've never heard of them! But then again I'm only speaking from my past experience what I've witnessed but I've been wrong before!

I don't keep a beagle stud dog.Back in the day when I was following registered Bluetick coonhounds I owned a real nice male that I made Grand Nite Champion. And you can take it to the bank that I never bred a female to him unless I had seen her tree her own coon or her ability was vouched for by someone who I knew real well and knew they were a good judge of a hounds performance.
Jimmie Abshire of Kentucky and owner of World Champion Levee Road Junie won't let just any bitch be bred to Junie. If he doesn't think you bitch is worthy it doesn't get done!
There are plenty of reputable breeders out there that care about what is produced from their kennel so don't sell the honest guys short just cause some are unscrupulous and all about the money. It is up to you the buyer to do your homework and find out who are the honest breeders and who to stay away from.

With that in mind a really good stud breeding stock really goes up when he cannot breed or passesDanny King wrote:i dont care i would breed everything i have to heli prop if he was still alive
