Those jersey's are inbred to reproduce type.
Would you rather breed a big sack milking Angus to try an get your milk cows, or a small sacked jersey that may be a poor milker but has the inbred background to get the best chance of producing super milk cows?
Breeding cows for milk production is easy compared to breeding good hounds of hunting. In breeding hunting hounds, it is the unseen qualities, that if not tested for that seem to elude us. Hunt desire is genetic, like any other trait once it is set in as dominant, like unto the milk production of the jersey, any average stock from that inbred for dominant animal, has the advantage over that of the mixed ancestry as to the odds of reproducing type in the offspring. jmho

Re: Brood Dogs
I have seen world champions with what I believe to be great ped not produce. Certain lines of dogs in my opinion produce certain traits and have a better chance of doing it down the road. I would rather go into a breeding having a darn good idea of what i am getting. Not saying breeding the best to the best will not get some great pups, but will it continue generation after generation. A good friend of mine back in the mid 90's bred a direct Paycheck male to a direct paycheck female. these two dogs were 11 and 12 years old and only produced one female pup, which he never even started. This pups was probably the last of double bred Paycheck that I new of. I have often wondered how good this up could have been. He to my nowledge only got one litter out of here and from what i had seen was a above average litter to keep the paycheck blood in his kennel. I am not a breeder, but I in no way could have a double bred paycheck dog in my kennel maybe the last of the paycheck that close up and not find out what it is. The thing is he had a different purpose and I respect that he under no circumstance wanted to take a chance in loosing what he had. I know there are guys whom would have payed a ton to have that bitch in their kennel and I am sure he had plenty of offers, but to him it wa not and still is not about money but bettering what has. I guess the real question is would we breed if we were not trying to get something as good as or better than what we already have. I know I would not buy a mature running dog that is not as good or better than what i have in my opinion and it is the owners opinion that counts. I do not believe in puppy mills or trying t breed just for profit and am sure there are some out there with just brood bitches that have never ran a rabbit being bred just to try and make a profit. But I am sure there are many like my friend that are doing it to better what they have down the line.
