here in the great state of oklahoma we have an unlimited time running hounds as we speak. the only times we are prohibitted is the first nine days of deer gun season on public land only and in some places they restrict you from running the interior deer gun season in the area, still legal to run on private land in those areas. so its pretty much opened most of the year. the economy just depends on what you do. construction down but not gone.
let honesty run through the veins of each and every judge at each and every trial at each and
every format.

As far as I know, here in Alabama we are not to run dogs during Turkey season.

Any other time, day or night, we run. I don't like running at night, but prefer early morning in the hot weather and run up in the morning. Don't want dogs to learn to hunt up and down a road or path for a track at night, but for a RABBIT. Run in swamps so dogs always wet and cooler for them. Lots of swimming for good exercise. Water cleans them off too.

Pretty much do as we please in just running dogs on private land. Lots of running in Cotton and Soybean fields next to rivers. Careful in choosing a spot to run to not run in ripe anything about to be harvested.

Don't run on any Federal or State management areas.

Northern,

Would like to know more facts about this. Did he have a permit? What was the specific nature of the offense? etc. I run at night ALL the time, have been stopped by the DNR and never had a problem as long as I showed them the permit. Course, the more experience officers don't even ask for it. I hunt only on state lands and run 6 dogs or more most of the time. My local cops come by on patrol and just stop and chat with their car running so that I cannot hear my hounds. I have to disengage with them. I guess they have nothing better to do.

Two years ago one of my friends got a ticket for having dogs at large during the quiet season, he did not have a permit and it was $65 which got thrown out of court because of technicalities.

Bob he did'nt have a permit he was on private land. a spot he been running on for about 5 years. he was running one dog. he said the dnr pull in on him gave him a $500.00 ticket for running doing quiet time. the ticket you have to go to court on because it's $500 or and 90 days in jail. don't know when he goes to court.

Northern,

Thank-you. That's awful. I thought you could run legally on private lands. I'll have to check that out with the DNR. I wouldn't pay it. I will also go in on any defense fund that you might want to start. I think it would be worth a lot of our time and purse to help out here.

It is illegal to run on any lands during quiet time public or private.Quiet time is from April 15 to July 15 as well as during firearm deer season and it is illegal to run at night in the state of Michigan. That being said I have not talked to Bob yet about night running permits and there are training areas throughout the state that I beleive you can run during the quiet time, but you must have a valid hunting licence for the game you are pesueing while you are in the woods. Hope this helps.

I got a permit application for MI to run on private ground. There are a whole list of things that you have to go through, post signs every so many feet telling that it is a training area and all sorts of other rules. I threw it away cuz it seemed like more of a pain that what it was worth. I sent in for my fox training permit about a month ago (the application) and still havent heard anything back. It never said anything about night time running though.

I have been using these permits for many years and here are the facts:

1. They are free. You simply go to a field office and get one and send it to the Lansing DNR for a signature.
2. You do not need a hunting license since you are not carrying a gun. Do not get caught with a gun unless you
have a CCW which I do and I do carry a weapon.
3. You do not need to wear orange.
4. Here is the kicker, they are issued for "fox" running only. If you get stopped, you should be running fox if asked
5. I have been stopped by the DNR and asked to show my permit which I did and all was well.
6. There are certain spots only where they are legal and these are listed on the form. You need a separate form
each area so I usually get several.
7. They are designed for running at night because that is when fox hunters usually train.
8. I have no problem with the idea of fox since I love to run them also.

I don't want to beleaguer this Michigan permit thread but these things are used by most beagle hunters, fox hunters, coon hunters etc. in the area. The DNR people aren't stupid so use a little discretion. Where we hunt there is not much traffic or other people using the land. As a result, the DNR officers have much more important things to do than harass us. I do not go out while turkey hunters are still in woods and I do not run around people's houses or any place else where a complaint might be made. Like I have said, I hunt every evening and had no real problems for all the years I have been doing it.
