Re: Mapel Valley or other Auto service techs
joey,
i dont know if this will help.i have 2000 cavalier, and the key got stuck in it.when i pulled it out it messed up the tumblers.i had to get another ignition set from a junkyard.when i put it in and tried it it started and died just like yours.i called a friend and he told me to turn the key and bump the starter, turn back off for 10 seconds, then turn forward until the dash lights come on.security light should be blinking wait for 10 minutes until it goes off then turn key back to off for 10 seconds.then you repeat this 2 more times.after the last time when (and if the light quits blinking)turn off wait 10 seconds and try to start.they told me it resets the security system
i dont know if it will work (i didn't think it would when i tryed it)but i just thought i would try to give you another idea.
also, i didnt have the chip key either
good luck

Joey video wouldn't load but reading your posts sounds like same problem my wife has with her car. We live in a small town and never take keys out of ignition so I don't understand what triggers hers but her security light will come on and stay on and her car wont fire (just crank and crank). We have to lightly bump the ignition and then leave the key on for 10-15 minutes until the security light quits flashing. Then turn key to off position and then it starts right up. Hers is a 99' Oldsmobile Alero and her key is a regular key w/o the chip. Not sure why it does it but we just do like I said and deal with it until we get ready to get a new vehicle.
Re: Mapel Valley or other Auto service techs
OK, here's what worked for me: First you do this
then you do this on the hood
then you do this
then you go behind your tailgate and
then do this
once you're done with that you're like this
go do this to yourself
and it should start.
If that doesn't work try this last step
Just having a little
Hope you get that tumbler replaced and it all works for you.

Re: Mapel Valley or other Auto service techs
Got home yesterday and tried to start up the truck. Well still was doing the same thing start die start die.
So I left the key on the ON position for an hour. Came back and it fired right up.
I spoke to a few friends of mine that are into cars. One of them has a buddy that works for a GM dealer as a mechanic. So I got in contact with him last night showed him the truck and explained what was going on. Today he is going to buy two components that are for the security system. The switch and the case both located in the column and work with the ignition. I'm pretty sure thats what the parts were called. The truck is at his house and I'm going to stop by today after work and see if I can't help out with this.
hopefully will be fixed today after almost over a year of dealing with this. Finally I can go run dogs without being scared of being stranded for a few hours.

it is fixed.
Over a year dealing with this. Afraid of being stranded anywhere. I use my truck pretty much for rabbit hunting and just running dogs. Thats the main purpose I bought it. So now that its fixed I feel much better bout going anywhere with it.
If anyone is having similair problems with their 1998 silverado start die problem.
Its these parts right here. Brains of the security system.
The switch and the case.

It is called a theft deterent module, they are in all trucks and cars. The purpose is someone can not cut a ket of your vin number and steal the truck, it must be programmed by ur local dealer. Years ago lots of divorces caused trucks to come up stolen. It is awfully hard to get a key cut at a dealer with a title proof of ownership and a current liscense.Glad it fixed joey, word of advice get a xtra key cut.

Those parts cost me $320 I got them at a dealer discount. Reg price was over $400. I saved a buck there. Heck I was willing to pay anything just so I didn't have to deal with the start die crap all the time. I was about to trade my truck in light it on fire leave the keys in it so anyone could try and steal it roll it into the river etc etc.
but now I'm back. Time to give her a good bath change the oil and wax er up. Make her shine. So's me and the dogs can ride in style.
I've got two sets of keys for it.
