Mapel Valley or other Auto service techs (update Pics)

Post by Joeyman »

I know Jimmy that you work at a GM service dealership or something along those lines. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY TRUCK

or anyone that is a mechanic.

I've taking this truck to TWO different shops and noone can fix it.

Video Please Watch this video it will show you exactly what is going on wth it. 1998 chevy silverado Z71. Before I dump this truck at the salvage yard Or take a giant sledge hammer to it. I drove it to Kirksville Mo = 3hrs from my house on a rabbit hunt and it left me in the middle of a corn field for 45minutes then started up for me and it was just about to get dark out. that was back during rabbit season

yes the security light comes on every once and a while. But While I'm cranking in that video it is not on. It flashes a few time but then stops.

and no I don't have a remote starter

This is a nightmare. I like my truck it has low miles and looks good but this has got to be fixed before rabbit season starts. I'm afraid to take it out just to go run the dogs. Afraid I'll get stuck somewhere.

I've tried the leaving the key on the ON position once. I think i waited bout 10minutes and it still did it. I really can't remember.

I bet if I try and start it up today it'll start for me and run fine for a few days then do it again.

Jimmy might know this one.

Security system for my truck. Is it all in the ignition or is there the box inside the dash somewhere?

by the way you have to wait the full 10 min. if it contineus to blink keep repeating the steps sometimes mine takes 30 min. im still trying to figure the problem out and my truck is a 2000 chevy.

I've been to that link before. I read more into it and this only applies to vehicles that have the I believe its called VATTS something like that. Basically the GM cars that have the chip in the key. My truck doesn't have that. So therefore you can not bypass the security system like that.

I have reason to believe the security system for my truck is all in the key/tumbler. I spoke to one guy that said there is a box for the security which is located next to the radio unit inside the dash. Then I talked to another guy that said there is no box in the dash its all in the tumbler.

I think the tumbler needs replaced.

Maybe Jimmy will see this post here soon enough with him being a GM service tech he has to know something bout this.

I used to work at a chevy store for years ... and I contacted my main man there... He said the first thing to repalce would be a Lock Cylinder. The key position and security sensor is built into it and it comes as a whole unit. He said that the security system (with the light flashing, I had him check the video) is what is shutting the truck off. He said that if for some odd chance it is something else... better start tracing down wires because it has a short.

That came from Steve... my Chevy store shop manager... 26 years in the chevy buisness!!

hope this helps!

Alright you the man. Thats what I suspected as well. It was the lock cylinder. The security system in my truck is all built or tied into that cylinder. I had a semi-worn out key and switched to my spare (GM) key brand new condition and it didn't help. Maybe the cylinder is worn out.

This has been a nightmare.

Replace the ignition and have it re keyed. The tumblers go bad. If it is not a transmitter key with security it will be fine and not have to be programed. Hope this helps. Hey tull the good thing about a ford at least they circled the problem, a oval that is. :moon:
