Wisconsin isn't that resrictive. You just can't run dogs on DNR lands (which there isn't much of) May 1- June 30 (and you can get a permit if you really wanted to run there). Other than that you can run rabbits/hare year-round on federal land, state land, county lands and private lands.
In Wisconin we can hunt snowshoes year-round with no limit. Cottons we can hunt in the fall-winter with a bag of 3.
For bear hounds it is a little different, you can't run them anywhere (public or private) during July and August, or on DNR lands in May and June.
We have somthing like 6.5 million acres open to the public. The vast majority of our public land is located in the northern 1/3 of the state. Lots of area to run hare in
And the best part is hardly anybody runs beagles. I've never ran into another beagler while hunting (I don't know if that is good or bad
)

Well I guess michigan just sucks. But I have never had any issues taking my dogs out for walks on private land of course with permission though.
I don't know how any state can stop you from running your dogs on private land. Especially if you are the owner.

Hey Dave where do you live in Michigan? We should get together and run dogs when season opens back up.

We can run anytime in North Carolina. You must have a hunting license though.

This is a good topic. It got me thinking about the regs in Colorado. There is nothing stated about training rabbit dogs. I'll have to call the Division of Wildlife and find out.

I live in Michigan too. Anyone had any luck getting a fox permit to run on state ground and if so how long did it take to hear anything back???

Well, I have to digress from those who are lambasting Michigan. In my area of lower Michigan, we run all year long, freely and with the consent of the conservation people. Training season runs from July 15th to Sept. 15 and after that you have open season until the 1st of April. After that, from April 15th to July 15 th. you can get a running permit to run at night. I run everyday. During deer and turkey season, I simply wait till the deer and turkey people are out of the woods before I turn my beagles loose. You are legally able to run during the deer and turkey season but I generally give the gun hunters a chance to enjoy their sport without my dogs running around.
When the snow gets too deep for the little bunnies, I switch to snowshoe or fox. Either way, the dogs get plenty of exercise.
Since I do not kill anything, it all works out well for me.

Louisiana has cut back the deer hounds this coming season to 8 days-each hound must have a tracking collar on and a special permit is allowed-these rules apply to government land.....rabbit hunting gets about 6 weeks on WMA's this past year, $15.00 WMA reguired to access our WMA's...no running any type hound during turkey season on government land....The largest timber company here in this state has barred all dogs on the land it leases for hunting.

If I were moving, I would not go to a state where I was forced to run hounds at night, since that's not something I ever do. Others may not mind that requirement.
Glad to hear Wisconsin is not as restrictive as I had heard. It's such a beautiful state with so many types of game. Cold, though.
I have heard the more you go east and north, the more restrictive all types of laws get. True?
Let's hear from a few more of you....How about Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi?
