I saw the new kennels on here you built last year sometime and you could push them together and put the barn style roof over it all, just a thought.Could save a lot of $ and alot of materials and time.Keith.

Got the wood today 4-8-2009 free wood at my work. Used as skids. I broke them up. They were for scrap pick up. We have a ton of skids too.

It's a start for now. qty 4 - 10fters and qty 4 - 6fters other misc.

hey Joey , im not trying to pee in your wheaties but have you ever used those skids to build anything before ? they will last forever , but man those things are tough to drive nails or run screws into and they will flat wear out a saw blade ! i can remember me and dad building a kennel out of those when i was little , lol , never heard those words come out of pops mouth before !

tell me about it. they are very dense. I'm aware of it already. I've already built one out of this type of wood. So I know what they are about. Just have to pre-drill then drive your course thread screws in. I have a miter saw. It cuts thru like butter.

Going to start on it here real soon.

I started on it this weekend. Got a fair amount done. Worked on it sat/sun. I ran out of lumber on sunday so I stopped early.

measures 11ft long By 4.6 wide.

the wood slots are half the kennel run. The wider boards are the other half. Spaced 1.625 apart. The 2x2's are also 1.625 apart. And I notched the wood for the wider boards.

Still have a long ways to go but I'll get it done

See the kennels in the background. THe one on the right is going bye bye. I feel its to small for them. Its only about 36" wide and the run is less than 6ft long. To small I feel. Then look at my double decker the run is 4ft wide by 10ft long. Nice and big. So I want to do that for my other dogs too. In this new kennel there will be 3 dogs in it. So the bigger the better. and I like building stuff.

another two days of working on my barn kennel. May 2nd and 3rd.

Finished up the floor then started working on the roof truss. Well I had started with one design then realized I was wrong and started over. Now I think I got it. Rain should roll off the roof now. and also will look like a barn style roof. Only problem I have now is I don't know how the plywood goes on the roof. I'm talking the edges and the trim that goes infront. I'll figure it out.

Took me a bit to figure out the roof but I got it. The upper half was cut at 10degree angles and the second angle was cut at 27 degrees. Overall from end to end is 52 inches long that's the width of the roof. I used mending plates to put it together. I also built the entire house part where they'll sleep which measures 25inches deep and 39 wide. Cut the hole for them to go in and out at 12x12 square. Still have to put my chew proof on. Also got the shed panels on. Cut them out and stuck em on and also cut the hole out for the dog feeder to attach. I also made a giant door to get into the house part with measures 24 inches long and I think was 11 inches tall. Put some hinges on it and I re-enforced the door by screwing 1/2 board to it so that in the winter time it won't warp.

I tell you what I am whipped doing all this by myself isn't easy. The neighbor behind us complemented me on my work told me I'll have the fanciest dog house on the block and that my beagles with be very happy.

It started raining on me about 3pm. I didn't want my new panels getting wet so I threw a giant trashbag over it to protect from the rain.

I'm proud of this roof truss design

A little more progress. Worked on it May 16th & 17th. Sat I worked on it from 9am till 8pm. I was beat by the end of saturday. So very tired.

I got the entire roof done. Putting shingles on wasn't the easiest. I'm not sure that I even put them on correctly. Hopefully she won't leak on me. I got up on the roof and hammered away till it was finished. Also made all my side trim as best I could to have that barn kennel look that I had visioned from the get go.

Got up sunday all tired from the day before but get it done. I started about 9am once again and didn't finish till about 6pm. I painted all day long. Took for ever. I first started out by applying the Thompsons water sealer on the kennel run. Went on like oil. Wasn't white at all. Looked like oil. So i applied it and now the run has a shine to it. After that I disassembled the kennel. Took all the panels off all the side trim set them up on the ground and put two coats of Barn Red paint on both sides. Luckly it was a bright sunny day with a good breeze and dry time was quick. After I painted the panels I started on the white. Two coats of white. Painting wasn't the greatest part of building this kennel but sure did make it prudy.

Here are all the pics as I went along.

I'm no carpenter by any means. Just the average guy trying to be one. Its not perfect but it'll do.
