A temp of 99 degrees is on the low side, normal will be around 101. Take her temp a few times daily, because 24-48hrs before whelping, it can sometimes fluctuate ... so a good indicator she is actually in whelp.
Also, a large litter might whelp a few days before scheduled, a small one of 1-2 pups might go a few days over. DO NOT estimate her due date just by the last date she was bred! Sprem can live within the birth canal for up to 2-3+ days so we estimate due dates on conception days, not breeding dates

I've looked @ before and after pics of this dog, and she does seem like she's in whelp to me. Maybe a small litter OR maybe carrying them high up under the ribcage, but if I had to make an educated guess I'd say she was bred. Is her vulva slightly somewhat swollen? It shouldn't be as large as it was during her heat, but a bred bitch's vulva will not shrink down to normal size. You can also palpate for pups, turn her over on her back if need be.

A few years ago we had an "oops" breeding that I thought would not result in a litter. The bitch was kept in good physical shape & is naturally very muscular, so I did not notice much weight gain at all until literally 4-6 days before she whelped FIVE pups!!! And keep in mind even that weight gain was insignificant, it was just her pups dropping, b/c she always carries her litters very high up. You can never tell with this bitch how many she'll have as she never gains much weight.

But 100% definitive way to know for sure if she has pups is to make an Vet appointment within the next 24hrs for an x-ray or ultrasound. The x-rays are about $150 over here, so should be lower everywhere else, lol. I would do the x-rays sooner rather than later, because if you do have pups and she only has one or two, there might not be ample contractions to push them out when the time comes. Labor may have come and gone already. So the faster you can get them out, if they are there at all, the better ...

I'm betting those lumps you felt were puppies, one in each of the uterus horns. The one you were actually able to measure it out on the film clip.
I wouldn't take a vacation day on fri unless she showed labor signs, are you off anyway on sat &sun? The vet won't give oxy shot most times unless she's been in labor 12 hrs, then before, he will check her to be dilated and a puppy having trouble being passed(out of sack or breach).
99deg is good sign, I've had them at 99 one day then go back up to 100 the next then back down to 98 finally, by the temp being down I'd say your within at least two days of having puppies. I don't worry unless the temp goes up to 103.

The watched pot seem to take forever to come to boil. I'm sure there's lots to google about puppy whelping and what to expect in proper order. Take this time to read up on what to expect and how the process evolves. You've got the nervous daddy syndrome, go look in the mirror for grey hairs to start to show... ... mama's have been doing this for eons on their own, she is already programed as what to do.
Hang in there pop, we're pull'in for ya...

Joey,
Another option would be to have a vet examine her and palpate her. If he feels pups then an xray can be done. If she has pups in her then the vet should be able to feel them. Then you could do an xray for the peace of mind knowing how many to watch for when she does deliver. Or if the vet feels nothing then save your money and dont do an xray. Sometimes you have to be specific with your vet in order to save a few bucks. That female I told you about that had 1 pup 2 times, on her 1st pregnancy she got huge. When she had 1 pup and several hours passed with no more pups I took her to the vet. He palpated her and said he felt no more pups in her but could xray her. I told him no not to do the xray and he gave her a shot of oxytocin and she was good to go. I have used this vet for years so I felt comfortable in him just palpating her..........he was right no more pups and everything was fine. So you might be able to save some money with just an exam.

Ultrasound is the best way. I have a machine in my basement if you were only in West Virginia. How close are you to Sanford Brown College in Fenton Missouri? They have an ultrasound department according to the internet. You might talk them into giving your dog a free ultrasound. I took a female beagle to a local college around here and they got a big kick out of doing a ultrasound and looking at future puppies.

actually i work down the road from fenton area. Just a few miles passed fenton area. hmmmmmm Image

I think I'd rather have a professional vet take a look just in case there are complications. But that is a neat idea.

I just left a voice mail message for the Instructor that teaches the Veterinary Technician class. Seems to be a good idea to me. I'm sure the instructor knows his or her's stuff to be teaching.

the instrutor just called me back. She thought it was an awesome idea but she didn't have the equipment to do an ultra-sound or x-ray. She said if they did she'd be up for it.

Oh well that was a good idea though.

update

just spoke to the vet in Rolla Mo. Very nice people to speak with. And asked what they'll do. She said the Dr. will first do a feel test and determine what is going on. If he feels its necessary for a x-ray he'll do a two sided x-ray for $30.00 bucks. WOW

ultrasound she said was $60.00.

St.louis x-ray was $250 what a rip off.

Appointment set up for 2:30 tomorrow. I'll let you all know what the scoop is on Monday morning.

WOW. They want $400 for an ultrasound around here (NYC/Westchester)!!!!!!! I am definitely living in the wrong place, lol.

I'd say she's definitely having fluctuating temps, tho, and you can probably expect pups tonight or tomorrow :D Take her temp at least 2-3x today, and if you start seeing it average out, you'll know her time is coming VERY soon! You might want some Nutri Cal on hand to help her through the whelping & give her a boost of energy if she only has a small batch. Good luck .....

I'll take her temp again tonight. Hard for me to take it a couple times a day. I need help from someone to hold her still. It went alot smoother last night. She didn't move around as much. Felt like it took forever till that beep went off. But I got it done. I'll take it again tonight.

Either way she will go to a vet Friday (tomorrow).

I've got to have someone look at her for me. I don't know other people who have beagles that live near me or I'd have them come out and help. They all live to far away. Who better than a vet.

I just hope this thread helps someone else out in the future. Lots of good info in here.
