Yes, I know...and I've been sworn to secrecy since I found out in 2001. It was a good run, but I'm not sure you will see The Houndsman again in the real near future. There's always a chance, though!

Author and model are not the same. I knew who the author was in 2001. It wasn't until January 2008 when I pulled these pictures off my camera that I realized who the model for Rufe was. I'd gone running dogs in Georgia with Sally and Daddy Rabbit and snapped this from behind them as they walked ahead. Tell me what you think.

Just throwing this out there .....
A big 'thank you' to you folks who brought Jim Kjelgaard's books up on this site. I busted my leg up in early Feb and have been laid up. I was never much for reading. I CAN read, I just prefer to be physically active doing something (anything) rather than be sedentary doing something (anything, including reading). I don't sit still very well.
Well, I've had surgery and have had nothing but down time. I hate tv worse than I hate reading. So, after I got sick of staring at the wall the first couple days, I started reading. I read some great books....classics. If you like to read and never read Robinson Crusoe or Treasure Island....you don't know what you are missing.
THEN, you guys mentioned Kjelgaard! Just because it involved dogs, I was interested. My wife is a teacher. I called her and asked her to look in the library to see if they had any of his books. She brought two home. I read Outlaw Red in a day. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I started Snow Dog tonight. These are the only two that they have at school. My wife stopped at a small extension location of the county library to see if they had any.... they didn't have any at that location, but they had them at other locations in the county and are having them sent in for me.
If you are reading this and haven't read any of his books.... you are missing a good author writing books about a subject we all enjoy. Hunt one of his books up. You'll be glad you did.
Thanks again for bringing him up. I can't explain to you the depression I have been in since I have lost my mobility. Reading in general has helped only a little. However, that Outlaw Red book did wonders. Better yet, I am hanging on the excitement of getting others from the library.

You probably would enjoy "Call of the Wild" by Jack London. It's a Classic.
I read all of those books when I was a teenager. Growing up in Louisiana in the fifties on a forty acre farm in the middle of nowhere was about like being restricted to your house in todays world.

"Haunt Fox" by Kjelgard is my favorite because it involves hounds. I read it over and over as a boy."Swamp Cat","Forest Patrol""The Black Fawn" and the rare "Fire Hunter" all great memories and all involve young men and thier dogs.I think at last check way back when, I had found and read all of Kjelgard's books. He has an amazing biography as well.

I did read "Call of the Wild" when I was a young teenager. I don't remember much other than it had foreign accents written into the characters language. I am just a dumb country boy who hardly ever hears a foreign accent. Understanding it in conversation is hard enough, but trying to read it and figure out what the guy is saying is harder yet.
I finished "Outlaw Red" the other day and started "Snow Dog" last night and am half way done with it. What I like.... they are just simple, simple language and ideas.... yet very interesting story line.
I'll be looking for all the titles he's written.
I'll also look for "Hunters Horn".
