I have some pups with a lot of Branko blood and they have longer thicker coats, also some of the Eagle Creek dogs are really heavy coated.

I talked to James Lane yesterday, the breeder of the Eagle Creek dogs ,and he said that the long hair on the back goes back to a stud dog he had over 25 years ago. He told me the dogs name but I seem to have forgotten it. Anyway he stated that ever since he has had hounds show up from time to time with the long hair on the back. I also mentioned the about the spine but he said he had never had any problem with their backs.

Maybe this will help.

I had a Jack's Iron mike pup years ago. He was mostly black w/ white collar and long hair. Whether throw-back or border collie we never knew but he went back where he came from... :eyes:

I suspect Rhodesian Ridgeback but they were once good hunting stock also. ;)
