Long Haired Pups?

I have a couple of pups, one male and one female, purebred, AKC registered, good bloodline. They are 8 months old today. Each pup has developed long wavy hair down its spine only. This is hair that is a minimum of 1 inch longer than the rest of the hair on the body. I have never come across this with any of my others. Has anyone seen this before? Will it last? Thanks for any input.

my ab/branko female has long waivy hair,when its wet it curls up ,her belly is the same,completly coverd with long hair

I have a male that has a heavy Branko x Ace in the hole back ground that has long wavy hair. His hair is coarse and curly around his neck and he passes it along to his pups. I figured it was a Canadian thing maybe adapting to the colder weather. He has been a great dog and his hair probably helps him in the briars. He is breeding a T-Rex female now. They will throw some Blueticks and some tri colors with the same hair consistency.

I don't know about dogs, but if humans have long hair following only their spine then it is probably due to incomplete closer of the vertebra (the two halfs of the vertebra did not meet at the spinous process, therefore, they are prone to injury to their spinal cord).

I had a pup that had long hair that also goes back to Ace in the hole in the pedigree.
I think there were 3 in the pedigree that had long wavy hair. The male that I had
could run the fur off of a rabbit, everybody thought he was crossed with bird dog
or something but he was AKC registered, and the 4 other pups in the litter had
normal looking hair.

I did some research (I google'd "incomplete closure of the vertabrae")and if his assumptions are correct this may be the culprit?????????? They mention BEAGLES as a breed KNOWN for this disorder. Just trying to help..........

trust me thats not what he is talking about if its the crosses i was talking about or have the same breeding in it alot of hounds in that cross has that it will grow out of the hounds

I owned a couple of hounds out of Lynn Perkins' champion Buster who was out of Branko's Bull Durham. Both hounds had hair that was longer and coarser than any of my other hounds. not sure what Bull Durham was out of but I have been told that some of Branko's hounds of the past had that characteristic. I agree that it may be a northern thing. Never saw Bull Durham run but heard good things about him. Buster was one tough hound and only was trialed at a late age when Lynn got active in trialing. A friend still has a male out of him, retired him with 3 wins toward grand and never bred him. Good blood to lose, coarse hair never bothered me a bit.

Thanks for all the info. I personally kind of like the longer hair down the spine, adds a lot of character to the pups. I had never seen this before, nor had anyone I had talked to. This is a new bloodline for me and I was curious if it was a normal thing. Thanks again. If I ever get a picture that shows the long hair well I'll add it.

Load them up,

Alot of hare bred hounds have long hair and most of your cottontail hounds have short hair. Most likely somewhere in this pups ped is some hare hounds from the north and they tend to have longer thicker hair. Often times this is pup hair that will eventually be less obvious however like I said if there are some hare hounds in this pups ped the longer than normal hair will always be there. I wouldn't worry about any abnormalities.

Thanks. Like I said, I like the long hair. The long hair down the spine is about the only thing these two litter mates have in common. My male is short and stocky (28 lbs) and mostly black. My female is all legs (18 lbs) and mostly brown. I am pretty proud of these hounds and can't wait to make a trial appearence with them.
