Dog loses tongue while hunting

This is an incredible story as was told to me last night. Let me set this up. Anthony Kerr and I are debating about breeding his Champion male Rifle and my female Charidy. I have a female from this litter and she started after one day in a rabbit pen, Anthony has a male that started quick and is an awesome dog. Kevin Dowell bought one from me and said his climbed the fence one day to get to his older dogs running a rabbit and started right then. The last dog I sold was a male that the kids and I named Dewey because he had dew claws. I sold Dewey to an older gentlemen. Well now the story...

I called to check on Dewey last night. The older gentlemen said that Dewey was an outstanding young dog, but he had a story to tell me. It goes like this. One day out hunting his dogs were running a rabbit, when they got out of his sight he heard Dewey give out a scream and he new that he was hurt. His pack was running a rabbit at the time and when the rabbit came by Dewey was not leading the pack as normal, he was just barely keeping up. He killed the rabbit and Dewey came and laid down beside the rabbit. The older gentlemen checked Dewey out and could not find anything visibly wrong with him. Soon the dogs jumped another rabbit and Dewey just followed the dogs around not doing anything. When the hunt was over and they got back to the truck Dewey was not there, so the gentlemen had to go get Dewey out of the woods. When they got bakc to the truck he and his hunting partners checked him out again and could not find anything wrong with Dewey. The older gentlemen decided to look in Dewey's mouth thinking a stick may have stabbed him. When he opened his mouth he discovered that Dewey had lost his tongue.

He took Dewey to his vet. The vet did not know what to do. So the gentlemen took Dewey home and kept him in the dog box for the night and then took him to another vet the next morning. Both vets clearly seen that Dewey had lost his tongue when he ran into a barbed wire fence. The older gentlemen is now thinking that he may have to put Dewey to sleep because without a tongue how can he eat and drink. The second vet said to feed Dewey with a syringe for a few weeks to see how things go because if this doesn't work the dog will eventually die anyway. Well, the older gentlemen did this Dewey put on some weight and is now leading his pack around again. Dewey can eat but he has to throw his head back and it takes time, he also can drink his water somehow he has learned to drink water.

I am going to see this dog. Although I believe the gentlemen, and he is a Deacon in the church and he is in a Gospel band, I still have to see this dog.

Anyone on here ever heard of this type of injury?

By the way, Anthony and I are going to breed these two dogs in about a week. We are going to see if the next litter is as good as the first.

I have heard of at least one other dog that had to relearn to eat and drink after his tongue was damaged and had to be amputated. But he did learn it.

Poor fellow ! He seems to be doing ok from what Pete told me last night, maybe he will adapt. We will make this cross again. I can't say enough about Petes female Dazzle and my male Blazer. For 10 to 11 month old pups they are both way ahead of any pups that I have started with big correct mouths. Not to mention their looks, both are well built blueticks.
It is a Branko x Ace in the hole background on the Sire side by a T-Rex daughter on the bottom side. The sire is a clean up check dog and the dam has great hunt. They both have booming mouths and are good line runners for medium fast dogs. My male runs the same day in and day out no matter what he is running with.
I can't wait for day lights savings time.

Ouch..................that hurts just to read about it. Hope all goes well for Dewey. Keep us posted.

Man that is bad.I found a beagle one time that had got hung up in a hog pen wire.Nothing left but bones and collor still around its neck.Call the man up and just what I though it was his best dog and it happen two years ago.He just knew somebody stole it.He was glad I call just to know what happen.

I knew and hunted with a Foxhound bitch that did'nt a have tongue. I never knew how she lost her tongue, but kept her here for the fellow that owned her. She did ok, with doing things dogs do like eating, drinking and barking while running. She was nasty ,because she counld'nt clean herself. She would pop her lower jaw to drink. We called her "Tongue".
