Why do dogs eat #@$% ?

I have been told many things why dogs eat crap.Vitamin K is what they are lacking?How can i stop all of my dogs from eating there crap of theres and other dogs also.I have try vitamins and diff. dog food and nothing seems to get them to stop.I have one dog that is very,very skinny and i have worm him with the best stuff on the market and had him tested and nothing show up in his samples.I have been feeding him more then the others dogs and no luck.I feed him dog food and table scarps.I only run him once a week.I just don`t know what is wrong.This is the best dog i have and don`t want nothing to happen to him.Please help me out if anyone knows what to do.On both of my problems.I was feeding BlackGold and now feeding SportMix.Any help would be a BIG THANKS.

See this question a lot. Ever raise a litter of pups? Think the mom cleans them because she read a book or something?

Naaa, they do it because they are dogs. You think it's disgusting, they think it tastes good. They also like to roll in disgusting stuff and sniff each other. It's what they do. When I'm cleaning kennels and set my bucket down they always have to stick their head in there and check it out. You can't put human values into them. The sooner you give up on that idea and accept them for what they are, the better.

As far as your skinny dog, some dogs are just like that. Some are hard feeders. I hope everything works out great for your dog. On the other hand, I wish I could teach all my dogs to "clean up" after themselves so I could throw away my shovel

The odd thing is, some do and some don't.
I've seen the greatest number, that are raised in off ground pens. Whether boredom or close proximity to the waste, undigested matter, natural minerals lacking, or whether artificial appetizers added being carried through the stool, I don't know but something makes it appealing to them. Never the less, I can't see it as being a natural thing, chickens do it to hogs, who do it to cows because there's parts of the undigested corn & mineral from the feed being pasted through. There has to be something undigested in the stool that draws them to it, but then again, another thought of mine is that, it can be promoted as a learned habit, "corruption breeds more corruption"? but still, the lacking substance or taste would have to be compelling for further ongoing offenses(brings to mind the nature show that has the tribe eating bugs and grubs and a large rat they caught in the forest, must not taste that bad).
I only know growing up, a hound with this tendency was not acceptable(to repulsive) to be kept around or bred from, they were branded as sh^t eaters and were passed on or put down and the thinking was, they were not very smart and the disgust and embarrassment brought on by such action couldn't be tolerated.

srpatch ya might be on to something about the litters in above ground kennells i have raised several litters in my life time never did i see very much of crap eating till now im raising my first in above ground kennel and one of the males is bad about eating other dogs stool it is disgusting especially when the come right up to ya n wanna lick me in the mouth or face like i said this is my first litter in above ground n the pups are bad about that my grown dogs i never see them eating other dogs ship

I asked Doc S about this once & he said don't worry about it. He went on to say that he had crap eaters in his kennel & if I had a good one I wanted to get rid of, he'd be interested (lol). I moved mine to on the ground kennels, partly, because I too felt I saw it more in dogs raised in above ground kennels. I'm not sure it stops them from doing it, but I no longer find hard pieces of crap in their dog houses, that they've been saving.
As far as your skinny dog, I bet this is the one that can run all day long. I have one that I have a hard time keeping weight on, but to her credit, she seems to have tons of stamina.

I found out long ago what causes them to eat Sh*t. When my wife and I got married she could not cook a lick but she tried. I came home from work one evening and she had cooked a BIG pot of chicken and noodles. I dipped a spoon into the pot and immediately took the entire pot to the fence and dumped it into the neighbor dog's feed pan. This was a huge White German Shepard that immediately went to eating my wifes chicken and noodles. I watched him for several minutes and he continually slowed down in his eating to the point he came to a scretching halt. I knew this dog gobbled his food just as a hound would do as I had feed him table scraps before but this time he slowed down which appeared to me that he was actually tasting the food in his pan. He then sat back as if to pause and then rolled onto his side and liked his butt for quite some time. It was then that I realized that a dog would make a great taster as he did exactly as I wanted to do after only having a very small taste of those chicken and noodles. After 30 years I always have a sh*t eater to turn to when I my wife cooks something that smells like that ole pot of chicken and noodles. I know if i take a sample of it to my Sh*t eater and he turns aroiund to get the bad taste out of his mouth I ain't eaten it. By the way the neighbors dog had to be taken to the VET as he almost sh*t himself to death as he had diarrhea for nearly a week!

The only time I've come close was when the lid came off the salt shaker...

i had one start it after feeding joy dog food,wasnt long one by one they all started eating it,im like charles,i think they learn this from others ,i have 2 that gag while sniffing the crap but they eyeball the others eating it so they join in,gagging and puking but they still do it

When my dogs come inside they will make a bee line to my wife's cats litterbox and eat every piece if I let them.

They used to eat their crap when they were pups, but grew out of it pretty fast.

When I first got my oldest male, he would eat his own turds. I made a mistake in buying that stuff from PetSmart that you put in their food to make them stop.
We came home after feeding him that and he crap in the house. I never smelled anything that bad in my life!
The house smelled like a combination of a dead body, sewer, hog house, chicken house, and garbage dumpster on a 90 degree day!

He never ate his crap again after that!
