i say just get one and make your own mind up wether you like them or not ,its just all what a guy/gal wants or likes,kinda like branko,awful bawlin,bramlett,northway etc,some like em some dont,just like when the awful bawlin came around there were those that liked them those that didnt,so i got my own and she aint going no where ,i run with sr patch and have seen marras on drummond,i liked what i seen

now i am in no way an expert , i have one patch male and i love him ! he has great kennel manners , minds great , hot nosed , tight mouthed until the rabbit is moving then he poors on the mouth , enough foot to overrun the turns , but getting better with every run ! works the check area a little loose but when he gets it you know it ! but the thing that will keep him here till the end is : he is all bussiness from the time i let him out till the time i load him back up and then hes mad as h#@$ about that , he has no play in the kennel or the field, he is offended if you pet him or give him attention, never seen a dog with his attitude ! never heard of a patch until i got him , from what ive read hes the norm for a patch , if thats the case , i will have another !

I used to only run red and white hounds, stuff out of Don McCutchens kennels,Ellison Ridge Redman breeding. To this day I still have some of that bloobline and I love it. About 8 years ago I got some Patch breeding and that changed the way I look at hounds. The stamina and grit that they have is unsurpasted in my opinion. I run both rabbits and coyotes with Patch Hounds and I see the same desire in the rabbit dogs as I do the coyote dogs. When my red hounds are gone I will own nothing but Patch.

I have to disagree with this statement. One of the things we like best about the Patchs is how bonded to us they become. Sure makes it easier to get them to listen in the field if they want to please you. I have 5 of them and 2 labs in the house.


Very tightmouthed but also hunt a holics. These hounds have no quit. They are pretty sure the job is to kill them, not just bring them back to the gun. Ours kill after the shot and retrieve the rabbit to us. Smart... sometimes too smart. I have seen them think around a problem, you can see the gears grinding. I have also had one laid up for a good 24+ hours cause he tried to run himself to death.

mine is an outside dog , minds great , eager to please , just saying hes no lap dog , hes a hunting dog !, plain and simple , tell him good job and hes happy maybe hes not the norm so that means ill have to be a little more picky when i get another, cause if i add another i want one just like him !

love my patch dogs. I have four and wouldnt trade them for the world they make me happy and as many have said on here before. different dogs fit different people. I seem to have a three year olds attention span and patch dogs suite me becouse they are always full of try and energy. also i like how they act around the kennel and field..dont know where your from but im sure someone can show you some dogs run.

You should go run with a person that has Patch Hounds and see if you like them. Like any line of beagle you can get good ones and bad ones. If you run with a person that breeds and raises Patch hounds you should be able to get something that you like from them. Check with someone in your area that has some and see what you think.

I have four full patch two branko/patch cross all about hunt they are they like to range a little but getting better hunting around me I enjoy having them in my pack like any of them the more time you give they will give you

Hard hitting and fast is a good description of the Patch hounds I know. They are also given to sight chasing once that rabbit is up and running. Like any dog, you get different personalities, but alot of the traits remain similar: fast, rabbit a holics, can be a little rough on checks until they age a little. Like I said before, they are thinkers so they tend to figure things out as they go. Sometimes that can be a problem if they pick up a bad habit (we have one that got really slick at stealing food off the table). But after 34 years of raising (Parents-chihuahuas, sister Jack Russells and Fox terriers, me Dobermans, Labs and now Patch) and training (countless breeds), I think I will have Patchs for life.

I have hunted with a few patch over the years and I would say that those that are line bred as much as possible and kept as much to the original “as much as all these years would permit”, hard hitting with good foot is a good description of them.

I do have a question for all those patch owners. I know color has nothing to do with how a dog runs and I have always really liked most of every patch bred hound that I have hunted with over the years. My question is where and when did lemon & white “yellow” become such a major factor in the patch line. Almost every patch bred dog I see now is mostly lemon & white. I hunted with patch hounds 50 years ago and my father and uncles had dogs directly from the Patch Kennels from Swift Eagle patch and One Spot Patch which was pretty much made up of Shady Shore and Fish Creek bred dogs. They even had a few from dogs much further back than that. All of Willet’s dogs were mostly all white with a tan or a dark reddish tan head or ear and a black spot usually on one of their sides. They almost looked like snoopy, from the cartoon. I know Patch and May Patch did also. Now I see mostly all lemon & white. Now I have seen a few exceptions, but for the most part all I see today is lemon & white. They run good and the color is not a bad thing, I was just wondering where and when that happened or what possible outcross caused that.

I know from reading the book that one of Willet's goals was making an all white dog, but according to his book, it seems to me at least, that color was secondary. I know the first patch, Patch, was an open marked tri color and he used some legendary dogs like Alibi Billy, who was a blue cap, to add the strengths he wanted. He also had some regrets about joining the black-blanket craze of the times. I am always reminded of the fact that just because a dog didn't personally run the way he wanted it to, it didn't necessarily mean it wouldn't be bred. He had the opinion that you have to look to the lineage of the dog and the individuals behind the dog, sometimes more than the traits of the individual. I guess when you have an operation the size that his was, you can be a little more selective about color without jeopordizing the abilities of your pups. My patch, by the way, is a tri-color and she is two generations removed from North River.

I am still fairly green with the dog breeding but I can say that the Patch hounds are what drug me into it.

Don't mean to rain on anybody's parade.A fellow from these parts went out to a well known Patch kennel in Oklahoma and came back with several running hounds.A fellow that I ran with regularly back then and a hard core trialer acquired one of them.He didn't keep him very long as he said he didn't have enough foot to run with his hounds or be competitive in the A.R.H.A. Little Pack trials around here.That fellow ran mostly Shake Rag bred hounds.
Another friend of mine bought several Patch hounds from a fellow here in Tn. that raises Patch dogs.I hunted with both these males many times.They were sure enough hard hunters with a lot of bottom and you could kill plenty of rabbits with them.My friend sold both of them as they didn't have enough foot for his liking and he said he couldn't place them at the Little Pack trials he was taking them to. All I can say is that they did not have enough foot to run well with my hounds.They would stay in the race but they never would lead it or could hold the front.My hounds are predominantly Branko and Maravic breeding.
