First off we are getting the snow and ice storm in WV so I am stuck in the house and bored.
All in all, one of the best runs we ever had was a house cat. I received a phone call from a guy that had heard what good dogs Don had. He wanted Don to take a look at his pup to help him get started and/or give him advice. So, we ended up driving to his place. Within minutes on the property, we had a chase. Immediately the guy starts bragging on Don's dogs, saying he had never seen dogs run like that in all of his years watching dogs. Of course Don is proud. I decided to cut the dogs off so I could see them coming over the hill while Don entertained the guy. To my surprise, here comes this huge black cat. At this point the dogs had been running about 10 min. and never had a check. I headed back around the hill to let Don know exactly what was going on. (Luckily, the guy was in his 70's and couldn't keep up with the dogs.) I didn't get the chance to tell Don about the cat because by this time the dogs were on their way back as if they just put a rabbit in the hole. The old guy continued bragging on the dogs all the way back to his house. Don of course let his head swell, thinking what a nice run the dogs just had. As we were leaving, I was telling Don about the cat and he started laughing. I bet the old guy had to be wondering what was so funny.
I will save the story of Don making the winners pack by running a turkey.

Re: Will Your Dogs Run A House Cat???
My wife and daughter own a cat. She is mean as a snake and usually will not run from anything. I owned two true medium speed dogs for a few months four or five years ago. They were sisters about a year old named Lucy and Belle. They could run a rabbit, but they were not my speed, but I kept them in shape while they were for sale. I was loading them up one afternoon and the cat was under my truck. That day she decided to run. They sight ran her to the pine thicket that is now a house next door. They slotted up and ran that cat around that two acres without a breakdown. All I could do was sit back and enjoy the music. The cat finally made a break around a fence and headed for home. I caught the pups as they crossed the gravel driveway dead on the track. Almost did not go run them that day after that display.
The turkey story reminds me of earlier this year running pups on a peninsula near one of the local lakes. It was what we thought to be a safe place to just hunt the pups. They jumped and some chests started poking out listening to the race. I headed them off as they made the turn.
They were headed straight toward me when out popped a big Tom turkey running for all he was worth. He saw me and went to the air. I almost hated to call it out on the radio, but they were pounding it. We all had a good laugh and started hunting again.

Re: Will Your Dogs Run A House Cat???
Two years ago, while hunting with the "good ole boys" here in NC. We had about 4 or 5 in the game bag and my male had jumped 4 of them and was the super star of the day so far. So, I started to trash talk. Good thing I brought ol Ranger today or we might not have any rabbits. say Matt is Daylight starting to slow down? Blah Blah. Ranger then lets out a scream that lets you know he jumped. He is close so I take off the safety and get ready. Here he comes with the other dogs harking in. Ranger has his nose about 2 or three inches from a big ol balck and white house cat.
The cat and dog both got to this big pine tree at the same time. The cat could climb, and did so at a speed that would make a lumberjack proud.
Needless to say I took a lot of teaseing the rest of the day. Gosh Dale's daog is just like him a cat chaseing son of a gun. There were others but I won't say them on here.
