A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I was just sitting on here and reading some of these post, and I have noticed a lot of the people on here have a love for rabbit dogs. I mean there are hundreds of us. I guess what I am trying to ask is how did all of you folks get into hunting with beagles?? I started when my grandpa gave me a bluetick male out of one of his litters that he had. That was when I was 9 yrs old and I'm now 18 and I wouldn't of thought it would be this fun, and I wouldn't give this sport up for the world! Jesse Duncan
Well i can kinda relate to you i have been into rabbit hounds ever since i was big enough to walk through the brush and feilds with my grandpa and my dad but when i got my first hound i was in Fifth grade and now I'am 17 and i have alwaysed had dogs since, it has just ran throught my family for years my dads side of the family and my moms side of the family.
Hey Jesse. I just got into it about 1 1/2 years ago. I used to coon hunt alot when I was in high school and could stay out all hours of the night. Well now I am 27 and I can't stay up late likeI used. I always ejoyed hearig the hounds run. So me and my brother went and bought us some beagles. You don't have to stay up so late. I will be into rabbit hunting until I die.
Jay, you have relatives by the name of Charles and Liz? They used to come to my church. By the way, Jessie is president of the Morgan County Beagle Club that I invited you to. Hope to see you sometime.
We used to always keep a beagle around as a pet. then a couple years ago my uncle took me bear hunting with him. That is how i got into hounds. during the week days when we didn't have anything to do(summer break) we would get bored and take our pet beagle out hunting and it turned out to be fun
From the "Stick Horse" Trigger, I rode as a boy , to the first full blooded beagle, Ben, I bought with the money earned from pushing an old reel type mower, we have always been hunters, it's in our nature.
As with our hounds, I believe hunters are born, not made. If given the enviornment & it's in your nature, you can't help yourself ...Patch
When I was a kid my brother, cousins and I used to be the dogs. Our parents would say "Get in there boys and kick up a rabbit" We had a beagle but never hunted it. Needless to say I didn't do a whole lot of rabbit hunting through the teenage years. About 5 years ago, my brother in law and I went out with his uncles old male. He opened up in a ditch line with the coolest sound I ever heard. (BIG DEEP BAWL) I was hooked instantly! I looked down and the rabbit was sitting at my feet. I shot it point blank w/ a 12 gauge. I still hear it about that one. "Should've kicked it and gave it running chance" I now own 4 beagles and hate it when I can't get out to run!
This is a good topic (for a change, shouldn't be any bickering). I had been meaning to start this myself but never got around to it. Anyway...
My brother gave me a grade beagle puppy in 98, much to my wife's dismay. After she opened for the first time, there was absolutely no turning back. That day was almost as good as my children being born. My wife has come to realize that I go hunting and that is all there is to it. She is really a good sport about it, but I don't get to do it as often as I would like. Especially now that I have kids, but wait until they are old enough to go along all the time...

Good Question,My dad came home with a beagle pup when I was 11 and I will never forget when he first opened as a 4 mo. old and a bunny about sat on my feet.Well the neighbor shot that one for trespassing,my first introduction to dog haters.Dad brought home a little female pup after that but it was not marked like a beagle, that was my first introduction to a bluetick and I have loved that color ever since. That pup was circling rabbits at 3 mo. and loved to hunt, was very smart, and eager to please.Killed alot of bunnies over her but we were too ignorant to know what we had and never bred her and got pups out of her.Neighbor shot her for trespassing and I was sick, didn't hunt over a dog again until 3 years ago with my brother-in-law and knew that I had been missing out on a lot of fun. Then I went to an ARHA LP trial and couldn't believe all the other guys that liked beagles as much as I did and how awesome a pack of dogs could sound.I have gone through alot of dogs trying to find one like that skinny little bluetick gyp and have learned alot ...about dogs AND people. For me beagles are my therapy,I don't run them to prove I have the best or to kill mythical numbers of rabbits,I do it to be a carefree kid again.
I got into beagling when my Uncle Harry gave me a beagle when I was 12, Boy that was a long time ago. He ran his dogs in the field trials and hunted them. I have been out of it now for the past 22 years, but getting ready to retire and start all over. Reading the magazines and watching the dogs my neighbor has back home keeps me going. I love the dogs and the sport. But to hear that sweet sound, there is nothing better.
It is something how you can remember those good times.
My Grandfather had been into beagling in the 1920's and my family always had a few, My grandfather made a movie for the Pa. Game Commision in the 40's about takin kids rabbit hunting ,he was really into the field trialing until the brace stuff started, then he got out of the competition aspect. My brother and have gotten into it again since they truly are GUNDOGS again. I got my own hound to train when I was about 7 and have been running and gunnin with hounds since then. I am now 38 and love it as much as ever. good topic

I shot my first hare when I was six in front of my dads beagles, never been without one since, Im 33 now. My first beagle that I owned at the ripe age of seven was a male named Buck.
Got my first beagle about '68 or '69. Had no one to steer us in the right direction so we learned the hard way. Got into coon and cat hounds in the 70's and 80's but still kept a few beagles. When fur prices fell off sharply I sold the big hounds and got serious about beagles again. Never trialed til about '92 but started with a good one (still have her today) and got hooked on the competition aspect of beagling and found out pretty quick that there were better hounds out there than I had. Started judging trials about '95. I've had over 200 beagles by now but still looking for better hounds all the time. As much as I enjoy the trials, hunting still comes first for me. Beagles are not a hobby for me, but a way of life.
My father got into the sport in 1981 with a hound by the name of Mike's Sure Shot Pete, Pete finished for IFC in 17 trials, so he lucked out. When I was 9 he gave me a puppy he got for stud. This hound was Kane's Irish Beach Bum, call name "Irish". Irish and I were the best of friends, when I was 13, my father took me to a trial and Irish won. He finished for FC within a year and got a win in Canada. I've been addicted ever since. I'll have grandpups of Irish's this spring and I can't wait to get them started.
I started judging in 1996 when I was 15 and judged about 8 sanctioned trials a year. I've been judging license trials since 1999, and do about 15 year. The past two years were crazy doing over 20 both years. I love going to both SPO and LPH and have good friends that go to both.
I WAS KIND OF LIKE KJOHN'S , I SPENT A FEW YEARS BEING THE DOG
JUMPING ON BRUSH PILES & KICKING HONEYSUCKLE. THINKING BACK ON IT , THAT WAS REALLY FUN. THEN LORD & BEHOLD ONE DAY MY OLDER BROTHERS ,WHOM I HUNTED WITH, GAVE ME AN ESSEX SINGLE BARREL SHOT GUN WITH A 36 IN BARREL & FULL CHOKE . THAT GUN WAS WORTH AT LEAST $15.OO BECAUSE IT HAD $10.00 WORTH OF TAPE ON THE FOREARM. I WOULDN'T HAVE TRADED FOR A MODEL 12. A FRIEND OF THEIR'S GAVE ME A BEAGLE THAT WOULD RUN. MY FIRST RABBIT I SHOT WAS SO CLOSE ALL I GOT WAS THE BACK LEGS OFF OF IT. I STILL LAUGH WHEN I THINK OF IT BUT THAT HOOKED ME. I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT YEAR THAT WAS, BUT I'M 61 & DISABLED NOW & STILL ENJOY HEARING A RACE AS MUCH AS ANYONE. THANKS FOR REMINDING ME. BUNNYBUSTER
