How far south?

Post by captbutch »

Just wondering how far south I would have to go to get out of the deep snow here in Northern IN. Snow is knee deep here and I can't get through, it much less find a rabbit. I have a hound on trial and would like to see him run a track or two before trial is up. Would take a day and try to run on some state ground if it's not too far. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks Butch

I don't know how much snow they got in Huntington but that is some pretty good state ground. Salamonie is right there as well. Both over towards Ft. Wayne. I'm 2 hours south and could put you on some rabbits here but that may be a bit far for you. We got maybe 2".

Thanks Tim,
I think we're going to try Salamonie Sunday morning. I've never been there but it looks like a lot of property to hunt. I called and they said they had about 5-6 inches on the ground, so it should be ok.

Huntington is a little better for numbers than Salamonie but let me know how it goes for you. If I had the time tomorrow I would come up and guide you to some of the spots. Unfortunatly, we had a water piper burst in the house and flooded 2 rooms, so I'll be on clean up crew for awhile.

Tim, sorry about the pipes... that's no fun at all.
Thanks for the help, I may go on over to Huntington if you think it might be better. Hopefully we'll find a couple to run .
btw I sent you a pm

Yes we did. There were four hunters and three dogs and we couldn't find any rabbits to run :( The area looked great, with lots of cover and heavy brush, but didn't even see any tracks. On the way back home we stopped at Salamonie, and did finally get one rabbit up, but it only ran a short track and holed up. Better days coming, I hope! btw snow conditions were a lot better than where I'm at near South Bend, only 5 or 6 inches on the ground.
