Equimax Wormer
About two years ago I read on this board about the good luck people were having with equimax as a wormer for dogs. The people that were using it would usually give one half cc of equimax one month, then the next month .3cc of ivermectin, and alternate back and forth each month. I have been doing this ever since and it has seemed to work for me. The question I have is on the box it states. PRECAUTIONS EQUIMAX PASTE HAS BEEN FORMULATED SPECIFICALLY FOR USE IN HORSES AND PONIES ONLY. THIS PRODUCT SHOULD NOT BE USED IN OTHER ANIMAL SPECIES AS SEVERE ADVERSE REACTIONS,INCLUDING FATALITIES IN DOGS MAY RESULT. What do you think about this?
Re: Equimax Wormer
Boils down to the dose amount. There's no recommended dose on the box for other animals.

Re: Equimax Wormer
Any wormer with Ivomectin is a hot potato for vets and drug manufacturers for liability reasons. Many vets and individuals use these "off-label" with dogs since they are relatively inexpensive. The ivometin one of the most effective wormers for Heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms. However, it has been known to cause adverse reactions in dogs. This is much more likely in collies for some reason. This makes it Russian Roulette for mixed breeds. With purebred beagles I have NEVER know of a confirmed adverse reaction - HOW ABOUT YOU ALL? Not hearsay, YOURS or a friend's of whom you have FIRST HAND Knowledge! I have an open-mind here but as now, I give equimax a "thumbs up" for beagles if given at a 4/10 to 1/2 dose no more than four times a year. I normally use a generic version drontal plus but it is my backup product when I am out of pills since I can get it at the Tractor Supply across town.

I also use it and give one click per dog per month. It has ivermectin in it so i don't alternate with anything.

Re: Equimax Wormer
Ill tell you my experience:
I was giving my dogs a montly dose of Equimax paste and had a tablespoon full that I was cutting off the apropriate dose for each dog as I went down the kennel. In the mean time my 4 year old at the time let my Walker pup out that slipped in behind me and ate the whole tablespoon full. About 20X the max dose for her size.
That night she was laying in the kennel almost completely unresponsive. I forced fluids down her throat and Pepto expecting her to be dead in the morning. When I got up she was in the same condition. The second day I hand fed her bread and hot dogs, but she still looked near death and wouldnt stand up. The next day she tried to stand up but kept falling down. I fed her again and forced fluids down her, still expecting to find her dead in the morning. The fourth day she was able to stand up but very unstable. At the end of one week she was back to normal. She turned out to be an extra special coyote hound and will tree coons at night. Have not seen anything that I could call side effects from it.
Learned my lesson on how strong that stuff is. Im terrible causious with that stuff now and keep it under lock and key. I switched to the paste instead of the Ivermectin liquid/injectable because its not quite so concentrated and easier to administer the right dose. 1/10 of a cc is hard to get just right even with a 1cc syringe.
