I don't see how guys that like to run dogs want to kill every rabbit that they see. I can't understand that at all. I love killing a few but not 50 per year. Some guys like doing that, but as for me I just love to listen to the hounds, not eat the rabbit.

Stan, I got your PM's...you are correct that I want a Maine hunt and it IS due to overcrowding at Drummond...but not for a lack of hare to run, just wanted to try an area with less hunters if I could. Plus it would be nice to take my son on a good long hunting trip. I just got custody of him last year after 11 years and we got some time to make up for.....

I drove by a nice looking spot to hunt a few weeks back. We stopped to ask permission to hunt the ground and the guy said he don't allow any hunting . The very next weekend we saw this same guy with a hole tailgate full of rabbits on a public hunting area . Thats the kind that burns my a$$

Re: They'll get you every time
You have it all wrong, it has nothing to do with trialing, I run my dogs every chance I get all year round to keep them in shape and hope they improve. The point is you have guys who let the dogs get fat and do nothing with them for 9 months out of the year. The for 3 months straight, they go out and murder every rabbit that moves, 90% of those hunters just jump shoot and what not, they aren't out there for the sport, they are out there for the slaughter and that's what pi$$es us guys off that run year round that don't trial that much. My group of friends, we hardly shoot rabbits, the kids shoot 90% of them, we haven't killed 50 rabbits in 3 years but we have people who classify themselves as someone like you who just go around and slaughter rabbits for no reason, just like people who use damage permits to kill 50-100 deer a year yet won't let anyone hunt, what are you going to do with that much wild game to eat, so don't give that line either.denny606 wrote:i would like to know just when people that are dedicated enough to a sport to feed hounds all year just to get hunt them 3Mos. out of the year as someone said on here ,became such bad people . They generally care deeply for their dogs and like to rabbit hunt. A lot of people don't have the time ,money or competitive nature to spend all year trialing and traveling all over the country. We are country folks who grew up hunting and have generally loved dogs all our lives,I am glad for you if you enjoy trialing and hope you have a good time while you do,But don't look down your nose at us for liking to hunt and enjoy eating wild game. Some of ,and not all you trialers are getting as high headed about field trialing as the tournament fisherman have about eating a skillet of fried fish, remember that one groups rights do not extend any farther than some one else's begin and like it or not it is legal to eat RABBIT,Denny
Re: They'll get you every time
you have no idea who I am, how I conduct myself or how many times a year I run my dogs,so easy on the murdering talk there bub,I was not talking about decent folks who like their dogs and like to run them and kill a few rabbits from them as well and as far as that goes I probably haven't killed 50 rabbits in the last 4 seasons ,but if I want to the limit in KY is 4 per day. I can't believe that someone would assume that they know me and what I stand for, just from a few lines on a post on a little forum like this. I'll try to fill in the blanks for you people who don't know me .I'm 49 over weight, got a decent sense of humor ,I am a conservative and most people who know me personally think I"m pretty fun to hunt with and hang out with in general,I always try to give more than I take and try to treat people fairly,oh yeah I'm a little short fellow too.If that's not enough Info, talk to some people who know me and see if they can add any thing I left out,Denny

90% of my gun-hunting is done on CA land. I rarely every run into other hunters droppings hounds on me. If I see someone I go the other way. If people see me they generally head the other way from us. Most the time we don't see any other beaglers out and about rabbit hunting. Every now again we hear beagles sounding off but it's so far away you can't see anyone. In Missouri their are tons of Conservation Area's to hunt. Most of it is excellent rabbit hunting

To top it off the property is owned by the county parks and recreation. I took my big male for a little solo time. We jumped a ton of rabbits. I was ectsatic to have found a public spot covered with rabbits that nobody uses. After running untill dark I left excited about coming back the next day to bring a couple of pups and get them in a bunch of rabbits. As I was leaving there was a guy parked out by my truck when I approached he asked if i killed any, I said no I didnt even have a gun, but I jumped a ton of rabbits. I told him this place was like a dream spot to work my dogs, and I would be back tomorrow to run somemore. He said he was thinking about duck hunting the lake that was on the property in the morning, I told him that I had jumped a couple up off the lake and there were some still sitting on it. I figured the next morning I would sleep in a little, let him kill a few ducks off the lake and then show up about nine and run some bunnies. Well to my disbelief when I showed up about eight thirty this morning this guy is there with about four or five guys unloading a couple dogs going rabbit hunting. I just about came unglued.

Re: They'll get you every time
ebag is correct that they are not only from out of the local area or town but many are from out of the entire state. This is what these big trials bring and I have seen it with coon dog trials as well. I have also seen numerous mine properties SHUT down for hunting when this starts happening and the locals complain as the mines do not want to deal with a liability issue to begin with. I have hunted coal mine property my entire life in Indiana and have seen many STOP hunting or go to leasing the property in which the leasees have to provide insurance as a part of their lease agreement. Many of these mines would rather close or lease the ground and let someone else worry about it as hunting is not their business. I've also seen numerous signs this year around Indiana where property is being leased by out of state hunting leases and one even had a web site that could be contacted to inquire about huntiong lease property. This was adjacent to state owned mine property that had never even been posted until this year. I'll also state that mine property is NOT public property as we have had to join a hunting lease to hunt property adjacent to my cousins place that we had hunted for years. Don't get me wrong as I have no problem with folks hunting where they are allowed to do so but when it creates a dislike for the locals be it traffic, out of the area or state plates, trash, the killing of large numbers of game and they start complaining to the mine people they will STOP it all as I've seen it and now have to belong to such a lease in order to hunt what we locals hunted for years.

The original post is why I keep my mouth shut.
If I am at a spot, I will say something like "I'm sure there are some in there - I guess I need to get some good dogs to find them"
If I am running a place that is really good, I don't tell anyone where it is.
I agree with Denny and Straight&Narrow.
I am a rabbit hunter. I haven't field trialed in over a year.
I enjoy trialing, but would much rather spend a whole day rabbit hunting than pay $20 entry fee to run one hour at a time, often with people I don't really care for (whiners), and win a piece of paper.
I would rather hunt for fun, with people I like, no rules other than don't shoot each other and don't shoot a dog.
I don't care if they jump shoot them, shoot grouse, shoot squirrels, shoots crows, and I don't care if no one shoots at all.
We have fun, and when I find a good spot I may not even tell anyone who asks the county we were running in.
I do respect other's spots. If someone takes me to a spot, I don't go back without calling and inviting them. If they can't go, I ask if they mind if I hunt their spot. People I take hunting with me I tell, "You can only hunt here with ________(guy who showed me the spot), this is his spot and I'm sure he would be glad to join you anytime you want to go. If anyone asks where you were hunting, tell them Campbells Creek"
The guys I hunt with are generally good guys and respectful. They understand that if other's know the location, it will get hunted hard.

Re: They'll get you every time
jar,
Murder? Slaughter? Are we talking about rabbits or people?
Shame on you for using those words to describe our sport of rabbit hunting. You sound like a PETA member.
And besides, if someone is hunting within the laws of the State they are hunting in, be they locals or outa towners, who has the right to bash them. I'm sure the locals dont mind these people when they pile into the gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and hotels.
Also, if someone has problems enough to get 50-100 damage permits from the state for their property who cares? The key words are: "their property". Its their lively hood being ruined. Maybe they used to allow hunting until the few ruined it for the many. Can you blame them?

Great post SilverZuk. If it is in season and ethical and you are in the mood to eat it I say harvest a few. Don't shoot me or my dogs and be safe while we are afield. Laugh joke and have a good time thats what it is all about. We try not to shoot any bunnies or hares on the jump though, would rather laugh at our potlickers trying to circle it.SilverZuk wrote:The original post is why I keep my mouth shut.

Absolutely, not only is it the law but a little foolish not to.
