how cold

Post by padeerhunter »

How cold of days do you guys go out for rabbits? Was planning on hunting with a few guys on Friday, but the high is only going to be 12 degrees. Not worried about us or the dog, but don't know if the rabbits will be out that good  Saturday is only suppose to be 20 degrees. Thanks

Doug

Never Know if you don't go :!: My hunting crew always says that a bad day hunting is better than a day stuck in the house .

I have run my dogs at 10F with the wind blowing 30mph and they ran the rabbits well. I think the only thing that keeps the cottantails below ground is deep snow.

I agree with Flash. You'll never know if you stay inside. I have had some awful good days rabbit hunting when its been single digit temps and -0 wind chills. I don't think they'll come inside to you so throw on your warmest clothes and go get them.

I have a friday morning hunt planned. Suppose to be low of 15 high of only 26 for the day. I'm debating on whether or not I should cancel the hunt and reschedule.

I'm off Friday, supposed to be single digists every night and a high of 25 on Friday but I will be out hunting, if the wind is still on those real cold days, you usually get rabbits trying to sun, usually not that hard to get up.

I still hunt even if it is below 0 but the colder it is the fewer inexperienced hounds I will bring. If it is -10 or colder there is only 1 female that I take with me, she seems to get it done, when it's that cold she's slow but she still brings the hare around.

I agree about the snow keeping them underground or at least going to the hole. We hunted this Saturday (in western pa, Lawrence county in the snow storm as well. We did get up about 8 bunnies but all ran right to the hole. I agree with Kbspeed, I think they know they are in trouble getting around in that much snow. We are planning on going out on Saturday. They are calling for a low of 0 on Friday night so Saturday morning will be a little chilly.
