Hey birmi 1nr, what was the snow depth on the island? How was the running?

When we left Sunday there was 8''-10'' on the ground, and probably 4'' of it came on Saturday. Friday and Saturday the running was good, Saturday being the best dogs ran from sun up to sun down and the only break in the action was when we went to a new spot. Sunday running was slow with temps in single digits and fluffy snow only the 1st & 2nd dog in the pack were able to get the scent. All in all hare numbers were good, but there were probably 4-5 other groups of beaglers on the island that were all shooting to kill.

Have they closed half the island with the snowmobile trails yet or is it still accessible???

Only saw one snowmobiler the entire time, but if they are getting snow now that might have changed.

Why do they "close" the Island when snowmobile trails are groomed? I hunted there for 25 years and never found any areas closed to just snowmobiles. Confused here.

Alot of the 2 tracks that you can drive down in the summer and early fall become snomobile trails in the winter. they post signs that say " NO WHEELED VEHICLES " so alot of the areas that are huntable early on are hard to get to. Unless you have a sled with a dogbox on the back. The DNR will issue you a nice ticket if you get caught driving on posted snowmobile trails.

It is alright then, to hunt but only not drive on the trails? Is the road back to Glen Cove considered a trail? We used to be able to drive back to the cove but not around to the beaver pond or north around the lake.

I wasnt able to get to very far down Glen Cove last year when I went up...some GOOD running back in there. The worst thing about the snowmobile trails, other than the obvious DNR ticket, is they are extremely difficult to get around in if there is powdery snow...I love going to Drummond, but I dont like to lose as much of the island to hunt as you do when the snowmobile trails are groomed...looking to go up yet this winter but hoping to catch a break in the weather first...

I know them snowmobeelers sure get mad when they have to get off the trail so you can get through with the truck! My favorite tactic is to drive till I get stuck, then dump all the dogs :)

Last year the Maxton Plains were inaccessable except by snowmobile...I TRIED to drive my 4x4 down the packed snowmobile road to no avail...had to stay away from the plains the whole trip.

A set of chains on a 6000# truck can walk you around pretty good... ;)
