Airedale dogs

Does anybody use airedales to run with their beagles and protect them against coyotes ? Have heard of this but never talked to anyone who has actually done it.

when i was a kid ( a number of years ago) my grandfather had a airedale on the farm he would chase rabbits,tree anything that would climb you could throw a rock in the water and he would go under and get it or a rock i sould say lay in the bushes by the mailbox and wait to bite the mailman and fight any dog that would come on the place they should work on coyotes

Do you have any more info on Airedale dogs? I'm curious. Are they still bred for hunting & not show? Do you know anyone who breeds them for hunting? Are they smart & make good pets? etc.

Sure there is. You wanna look for stuff that is Redline bred, down from Henry Johnson's old stuff. There's still plenty of guys who use them to supplement a hound pack for bears, yotes or whatever. NorWester, is Henry Johnson from Tennesse and used to write a column in Full Cry years ago?

Back in my younger (and dumber) days we made a trip to North Carolina to get a couple Yadkin River bred walker pups. We hunted late that night with Jack Dobson, went back to the motel and slept a few hours. Next morning we picked up another pup and then drove to Tennesse to pick up an Airedale pup for a local coyote hunter before driving the rest of the way to Minnesota.

The Airedale breeder lived in a trailer in the middle of nowhere, I think his name was Henry Johnson? When we told him we planned to keep driving 'till we got home he said we couldn't have the pup, he didn't want it riding with us! He finaly turned over the pup and we went on home, we drove about 1000 miles that day.

That didn't seem too bad to me as I had help driving. I made the trip from northern Minnesota to southern Alabama to go hunting a couple times. Always drove straight through and didn't have any help. That took about 27 hours.

I got that all out of my system, I hate to leave home anymore.

That would be the guy RiverBottom. I don't believe Henry has the Airedales anymore or works any of the smaller terriers either, knees were shot the last time I corresponded with him and that was a few years ago, (he has or had a working Lakie from us) plus he was gettin on in age. But yep, used to write in Full Cry and frequent a few of the online working Terrier sites but I haven't seen or heard from him in ages.

there is a guy in LaPorte In. that has some nice Airdales. he hunts them on hogs & yotes. he also has some that compete in Ringsport what ever that is.he has some pretty tough dogs. i wanted one but went to raising Welsh Terriers instead. i have a male Welsh Terrier that would take on a coyote for sure.

when I was a kid my parent breed airdales the are great hunters ,very loyal, they will pertect their ower and family, and any other dogs you have. my parents rabbit hunted with them and mostly bird hunted, they make good reteivers as well. I think they would take on any size animal to petect you and your dogs. and they can change gears and play with kids and have fun until trouble arrives then they are on gaurd duty. good luck. cinda barnett
