I think A guy can run in tough conditions without having to put a dog down in the extreme heat( 80's or above) I mean how friggin hot do think they get poundin in the brush where the air ain't moving. I ain't saying that i ain't never ran dogs when it was hot but if it's in the 80's or better midday sun, I don't hardly friggin think so! I'd say you gotta be outta your mind and don't deserve a dog let alone one good enough to pound it in the heat. Like some of you said outwest you may not have a choice but I am sure most guys that have ANY respect for their hound at least run early or late evening if not at night to keep their hounds conditioned in the summer. If I had a dog die from heat stroke because I didn't have enough sense to stop him I would hope to smile that somebody would be man enough to stop me. But thank God I'm man enough to know better than to do that to my hounds. They work hard for me, the least I can do is feed them good and take care of them like they deserve it and not kill them for braggin rights.
It takes a better Man to know better than make a stupid choice and do something like that. I mean some of you guys are that do run in the heat have no choice but at least from what I've read on this post you have enough sense to run near water or offer your hounds water. And like some said some dogs can handle it but they can all be worked to death. It just pisses me off to even read that some guys have seen dogs fall over at field trials and were there with a hpound to begin with in that kind of heat :angryfire: :angryfire:
If I have offended anyone then all I got to say is you must be the kinda guy I'm talking about and you oughta have your dogs sent to someone that has more respect for them. I mean come on why would you run a dog to death :ashamed:
:annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:

BriarCreek, I wish everyone would read your post and take it to heart. The only thing you missed is that most of these dogs that are dying young from kidney failure were done in by running in the heat. Just because you have a dog that can run when it's hot and not tip over does not mean you are not killing it.
42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.

if i am running when it is hot..like i said i alway run near water and make sure they break and cool off..also it is never in direct sun light usually at night..and not for long periods of time..i dont think it is a big problem if done in moderation..i agree some guys get a lil to extreme for me..i wont run for 5 hours at high noon..and again some hounds take it better than others...if run in moderation or at night you can keep your hounds in shape in the summer months and not kill them in the process..but i agree again some do not take head to the warning signs or common sense when running their dogs..

Its as dry in Eastern Washington as its wet on the West side. Lots of dogs don't show much here when its dry. I tell those that want run here when its too dry. But I find a hound will get the hang of it in awhile if you give him some time. They must learn is what you have is what you get and when its dry, it don't get any better. That the reason I began to think all the dogs smell the same. The brain must adjust not the nose.

Being a Teacher/Coach, I do 85% if not more of my training in the summer because I'm off. Day break until usually around 12-1pm, 3 to 4 days a week. Some night running, but too many coyotes for alot of that. Lot's of water, and gator aid for the dogs as well as myself. We do our best to run in and around water, ponds, creeks, rivers, but in summer around western NC the copperheads, moc's, and a few rattler's make that tough to do. Unless you know which waters to stay away from. And during trial times, those champs, and grands go out right in the hot, dry, times of the day. and you can tell the ones that get a little hot running time from those that do not.
If I had my rathers, I'd rather not, but I have to go when I can, to get all the running in that I can.

This is a subject that has hit close to home. I live in Texas and if I want to keep my dogs in shape I have to run in the hot weather. My experience is, just like on cool days some days the dogs can smoke a rabbit on a hot and dry day. Now if the dogs lock on to a swamper on a hot and dry day my experience is they'll catch him before long. In hot weather rabbits go to water when they get hot and when they get in the water they cramp-up. I'm not trying to sound like I have super dogs or anything like that, but from time to time it happens. Now let me say this, this year I have over heated two promising pups and they died. They both had plenty of water and actually layed down in the water while the older dogs continued to run. Instead of me picking them up I let them get back in the race when they rested up. (Wrong thing to do)!!! Both ended dying a couple of days later. Like someone said earlier some can take it and some can't. I will say this though, you can check a dog's heart in the heat some will quit and some won't. I want the ones that won't. You just have to be smart enough to make them quit when the heat starts getting to them. Chris

Well Herpin from what I read of your post you ain't smart enough to know when to quit or you wouldn't have killed two pups running them in that kind of heat :blackeye: :censored:
For the sake of the hounds you own and will ever own I hope you have learned your lesson.

Oh and one more thing If and when i ever have a dog for sale on here DON'T CALL ME I don't want them to teach you another hard lesson

Who wants a hunting beagle that has been pampered? The temp is too hot, the air is too cold, the briars are too sharp, it's wet outside, FeFe we will stay inside today and rest on the couch. ;)

I'm just smart enough to know when to hold'em and know when fold'em.

As far as you Herpin you ought to read the post I posted On Sep. 27 and leave it that. I'm an easy going guy and don't have a personal issue with you and yes I have made mistakes (lots of'em) still do. I just hope your the same kinda guy I am and have learned your lesson and from what I can see it sounds like you have. So all I can say is right on, and hope you don't run any more dogs to death and just for the record I have never ran a dog to death, that ain't spoiling them it's just protecting my investment. I ain't like some folks and got more money than I got sense ( don't get your panties in a bunch I ain't pointin no fingers, just saying)
I just meerly stated my opinion, I think I'm intitled to that regardless of how strong or mild it is. One thing I do know is if it stirred anybody up that bad I'll tell you like my preacher tells me apparently you got some repenting to do
