Small Pack option promotes the best rabbit dog as far as todays trials go
Each format has its good points and bad and most would promote a good rabbit dog
only if the rules set down for each is adhered to
unfortunately that is not the case MOST of the time ,Why?
It all rests in the lap of the judges of today They are the only people that can make it happen! They are the people That need to interperate the rules and judge according to whats set down and not whats on the other end of the lead or what bloodline it is
They are the people that are supposed to be Objective about the hounds put down under them each day!
They are the people that should be above reproach and have only the improvement of the beagle as a breed in mind and looking to get the absolute best hound out of the mess on a given day
Its hard work to do the above and the fact is in todays atmosphere most are not willing or are not physically fit to put the right effort into the job at hand.
So it becomes just a big game to most and the best hound dont mean crap to quite a few out there that are given the responsibility of evaluating our hounds!!

I agree that it is up to the judges in ANY format to adhere to the rules. Rules are only as strong as the people who have been given the opportunity to enforce them. In a "shrug your shoulders society" unfortunately people that will adhere to the rules consistently are hard to come by. I have witnessed first hand AKC, NKC, and Ukc formats, and in all of them at one point or another had a judge who did not follow the rules. I do not field trial too often, because quite frankly I don't get into the political side of the story; however, when I do go, I do enjoy being with other people who share my same interests. To answer the question, I try to promote the best rabbit dog for me as I possibly can, but I have my own agenda and set of rules to live by. Every time I turn my hounds loose I am evaluating their performance, and at any time they can be sent to another address.

i havent checked this post ina while ,, i seen the lp is coming up top now lol. what a joke .. are there good dogs in lp sure are some very good dogs .. but do the rule promote such not at all. and getting worse all the time,, before long to champion out in lp your dog will have to have a few deer races under his belt and leaveing the AREA it got 3 barks in wil be a plus 30 instaed of the minus it used to be ....

your 100% right if we go to the trials it should be an enjoyable experience
and we should look at it from the standpoint you mention go for the comaradie and to visit with friends
by the same token we go to have our hounds evaluated in an honest and objective manner to see how they actually compare with the other guys
The rules DO promote the best hound on a given day its the interpretation of and the abilities and integrity of the few that DONT promote the best

Some of you guys are much more knowlegable then I am... what formats out there let you compete with a pack of hounds.... a judge or two judging your pack run for a certain amount of time? If there is such a thing could you answer a few questions for me?

1. How do they judge it, what type of things do they award or take away points for?
2. Are they competing against other packs?
3. How many dogs run in a pack at a time?

I've got some ideas I think would make for a really cool format with the idea of running a pack, but didn't know what else is out there like it already?

I run lp and pp and I think pp is better .Lp allows the dogs to be to loose.

I'm familiar with the arha, ukc, pkc, akc trials..... what I'm asking is there a format where you run just your pack, your 3 or 4 hounds together and they're judged as a pack, not 4 or 5 dogs all running and competing against each other.

Yes the two couple pack were you run your 4 dogs and the one we do for faster dogs is the Gun Dogs two couple pack.The gun dog two couple pack is something eles.You can tell who got what and know what in 15 min.

i absolutly agree that midwest and pparha/ and ukcperformance pack . arha lp doesnt have enough emphasis on line control and not enough rules to weed out dogs with bad habbits that messes up a race they just promote big loses by only scoring 15sec loses and no check area is unbeleivable in my book . and mouthy dogs tend to do good in arhalp i firmly believe that arha lp was set up to cater to hounds that are to rough for akc . but a true hounds man nows this . but we all have some of these hounds and can shoot rabbits over them . but they are not the ideal rabbit dogs . and a dog that runs med.fast and very few breakdowns puts more pressure on a rabbit by not allowing himto rest our do tricks. that is a rabbit dog. and that is what akc midwest/arhapp/ukcpp/ promotes clean line control dogs that put pressure on rabbits by not having big break downs,

to say which is the best is different for everyone. each registry has its pluses and each has its negatives. None are perfect by any means. As there is Junk that slips through and does well in all of them. There are things I personally like about NKC LP and there are things I like about AKC Midwest. It comes down to what you want to feed. If you feed what you like then nothing else matters if you feed what you think will win you trophies and it doesnt coincide with what you like then you will chase your tail in the long run and never be successful at a trial or filling a game bag. of course this assumes everyone likes a Real Rabbit Dawg.

I have had the privilage to hunt all the formats, that are listed except the large pack. I will not bad mouth any of them, because I hunt where I think my dogs style fits the program. The best program to me is when a bunch of friends, just get together, no matter what style of program they hunt and make a decision of what they want to run at that time. No rules, no watches, just a good pack of dogs and some hard running rabbits. One more thing, your welcome to come to run with me anytime.
