Lots of pups & dogs out there for sale ???

Post by sgc »

Seems to be a lot for sale these days with not many buying. I think the prices are coming way down on well bred pups and running dogs. I know I'm in the market for a young hound & have crossed many off my list because the price of gas could add another $130 (at least) to the cost if I had to drive 5 hours (one way) to pick up. Thoughts ???

I think you are exactley right. It cost to much to drive to pick one up. I bought a pup off a guy that just lived an hour away, and my truck still took about 50.00 bucks to get him. That dont sound like much, but if would been any farther, I would not have been able to afford to have went and got it. I price of good dogs are going down, so people can afford to come get them.

If it's a hound you really want $100 more is not much for 10 years of hunting and more.

Unfortunately you won't know that until you spend your $100. A buddy and I heard about three well bred young bitches that were about three hours distance from us. The pedigree was impressive and the guy who told us about them said they were running. We made the trip and as soon as we got out of the truck and introduced ourselves the man pulled out his pedigree book. I said I would like to see them run. He said, I'll warn you there aren't any rabbits around here, coyotes, house cats, and hawks. He turned those dogs out and they did absolutely nothing. They wouldn't handle, wouldn't come when called, and wouldn't even follow the owner into the thick brush. We tried to get some action by turning loose and old bitch with them. She soon opened as if she had a rabbit up but the young bitches showed little or no interest. I would not have taken them it he had given them to me and he wanted $300 each.

Its been my experience, lately, that a pup that was selling for $150 to $200 would cost me $300 to $450 by the time I got it home. I'll think twice, now, before paying more than $100 for a pup. Even at $100, the pup would cost me $250 by the time I pull in my driveway.

I don't believe the problem is with the price, I believe, and this is just my opinion, too many people are breeding too many females to the latest craze stud dogs out there and then selling what they don't want. I seen a post on here awhile back, someone bred five females to a stud. That is a whole lot of puppies to pick through. Remember this is only my opinion. Brian.

I think you're 100% on the mark. Was actually just thinking about this, how now one breeds for an entire litter of great pups anymore. Instead it's breed to as many bitches as possible and hope some of the pups turn out. Instead of trying to get a litter of great pups some are settling for one good pup put of a mediocre litter. That will mean too many Beagles flooding the market at once, and a lot of mediocre ones at that, so another reason why prices will fall.

Just my 2 cents.

I have a 13 3/4 " female that can pound a rabbit at only 10 months old. I had her for sale on here for a while and no offers. She is not out of the latest stud or anything currently on the market, but I do have a bunch of time and money invested in her and she is a nice bitch but I am thinking because she is not out of Reggie, or Prop, or Turbo or whatever other stud that is getting a couple hundred dollars for a pup, she isn't worth $150. I am taking her off the market and I'll see you at the trials with her, she can flat get it done. Brian

I mean no disrespect to the studs I mentioned. Brian.

I've found several dogs i'd like to have in eastern Kentucky and Ohio. I thought the price was more than fair on all of them. ($400-700 for 1-3 year old bitches that could do it all) My problem was getting them to Arkansas. I could get one hauled for about $300. Fuel prices suck!

Before you read my post please note : I'm not downing
or talking about anyone but excellent care given to bloodlines
with great potential goes a long way . Owning a true hunting
beagle is ayear round job starting from before they're ever
born .

The economy is really taking a toll on me and most
everyone I know but remember this :

If you breed for quality , they will come !!!

[/quote I am the guilty one that bred five females to the same stud, I lost one whole liter and saved two out of another, 17 puppies in all what I had to deal with. 2 went to Mo. and 2 went to Fla. the rest was either sold or traded locally, I am keeping 4, still have one code blue and Jasper for sale... I have been going thru bitches for years trying to select some that I thought was worth breeding, I was trying hard to bring good quality hounds out there, and I applaud any other breeder that tries to better their kennel.. every one of the bitches I own came from reputible breeders. Locally we have cattle farmers selecting herds of cattle and bulls that suit them certain breeding of goats..people who love horses very selective in what they want why is there a question on selective breeding to try your best to produce good hounds, and why would you doubt, reggie or jasper or even these striker hounds and others that are proving reproducers, yes I agree breed for quality not quanity,,one man alone took 7 of those puppies, he sold some, but he also kept some one to be a stud others to trial. I agree with Jude a puppy say you have 350.00 dollars in and you get 10 years of pleasure with and say a pet that you have purchased that is far more exspensive than the beagles, yet the beagles will hunt their heart out for you, what gives?

As long as we are breeding our bitches to better the breed and not just try and make some money, I don't have a problem with it.
