Cut Pad
I have a young male with a cut pad that was injured a month or so ago. Lay him up a few days and he is OK then when ran again the pad opens again. He is pretty much only using three legs currently to get around and it is clear he is in pain. What is a good med to heal these type wounds? I am going to lay him up for an extended period of time and see how he does. If after laying him up and the condition returns I am taking him to the vet and figure there is some foreign material embedded inside. If he has a thorn or something inside will this naturally work itself out over time or will it require surgery? This is my first with a dog with a pad condition. I guess I have been lucky considering how hard the dogs get ran. This particular hounds likes to run hard and fast and gets a little risky at times so I am concerned he may have embedded a stick or thorn inside his pad.
One last bit of info there is no infection or swelling. Just a cut.
Thanks
Ed

Re: Cut Pad
Ive seen lots of cut Pads, especially on Foxhounds.
It is easy to wear off the pads on frozen ground too. I use the pink ointment from alaska. It is better than anything else I have used. I try to leave mine up atleast 2 weeks if it is a bad place. If i get one that keeps getting wore off or cut I lay him up a little longe, 3 weeks or so.

Re: Cut Pad
Thanks Mike for the info. I will have to pick up some of that ointment. Probably an online only item I am sure. Don't know if TSC sells it or not. I have heard of guys super-glueing the cut together but don't know if that is a good remedy or not.

Re: Cut Pad
I HAVE HEARD OF POEPLE USING SUPER GLUE TO BUT THAT COULD CAUSE AN INFECTION AND THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORSE.......IF HE HAS NO INFECNTION THEN HE PROBABLEY DOESNT HAVE ANYTHING IN IT JUST A BAD CUT THAT IS GETTING COMPLETLY HEALED BEFORE HE RUNS AGAIN.......THE EMT GEL DOES WORK GREAT IT WILL STOP BLEEDING AND EVERYTHING I THINK THEY MAY HAVE IT IN A SPRAY NOW IM NOT FOR SURE BUT THE GEL WORKS GREAT......ALSO THERE IS SOME STUFF CALLED MUSHERS SECRET........THIS IS MAINLY FOR WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING IN THE WINTER IN A COLD PLACE WITH ALOT OF ICE OR SNOW......MUSHERS SECRET ACTUALLY IS MEANT TO SEAL THE PAD UP TO KEEP IT FROM WEARING OFF DUE TO ICE OR HARD FROZE GROUND........IF THE EMT GEL DOESNT WORK THEN YOU MAY WANT TO TRY THIS THE MUSHERS SECRET IT WILL LITERALLY SEAL THE PAD COMPLETLY UP FROM DEBRI,ICE,SNOW.....I WOULD TRY THE EMT GEL TO TRY AND GET IT TO LITEERALLY HEAL UP AND CLOSE AND THEN I WOULD MAYBE GET SOME OF THE MUSHERS SECRET WHEN YOU STARTED RUNNING HIM AGAIN SO IT WANT BE AS EAASY TO OPN IT UP. BUT I WOULD USE THE EMT GEL AND LAY HIMN UP FOR ABOUT 2-3WEEKS UNTILL IT GETS BETTER AND IF THAT DONT WORK I WOULD TRY THE MUSHERS SECRET, AND WOULD THINK ABOUT USING THE MUSHERS SECRET THE FIRST FEW TIMES YOU RUN HIM AFTER HE HEALS. HOPE IT WORKS OUT AND HE GETS BETTER.

You can soak your dogs feet in pickle juice for a few minutes every day for a week and that will toughen up your dogs feet

Re: Cut Pad
That EMT Gel is some wicked stuff boys. After a few days he is looking real good and running full bore in the yard. I have not let him go hunting yet. Maybe in a few more days. I bought some of the Musher's Secret Chris was writing about. Looks like a wax paste. I will put that on before I run him and see if it keeps his pad from reopening. I can hardly see where the pad was cut already. What is that EMT stuff made of....magic dust.

Re: Cut Pad
I now use "Blue Ointment" from Alaska on cut or badly worn pads. As far as I'm concerned, it's a miracle cream.
For prevention, I use the same stuff they use at dog tracks to keep the greyhounds feet supple. It's called Pad Protect. I had to get it at a pet shop
, but it keeps the pads and the webbing supple and less prone to cuts and scraps.

Re: Cut Pad
I couldn't stand any longer and had to let him run tonight and before I ran him I applied the Mushers Secret. He held up real well. Ran him for about an hour and a half. Ran one for about 30 minutes in the tuff conditions. I am pleased. Thanks again boys.

Re: Cut Pad
After it heals you may want to try some Tuf-foot to dip his feet in. I've got one that had soft pads that kept getting cut up, started using that and the problem is gone.

Re: Cut Pad
Do not use superglue on a cut pad. You are asking for an abscess.
If it's cut deep, it needs veterinary care because it needs to be probed for foreign objects. This needs to be done under at least local anasthetic. They'll likely drop a couple sutures in it at that point as well as some nitrofurazone ointment.
EMT gel works great.
Honey also works good. Sounds stupid, but honey is a natural antiseptic and is used quite often in wound care. The sugar will draw the water from the wound, making it a poor environment for bacteria to survive. The sugar also creates a great substrate for new tissue to grow. You can do an internet search on honey wound care for more information. In this case it takes a while, and every couple of days you have to trim the dead tissue away with sharp scissors. Just a little honey, a few gauze pads some tape and some vet wrap. NOthing too tight or you cut off circulation and really pay the vet.
Once in a while cut pads will need a spoon or some sort of splint to spread the weight out to the other pads so that it gives the cut pad time to heal.
