I think I'm going to try the Hornady 117 gr BTSP Light Magnum. I went out this week with the range finder to some of the spots I hunt. The longest spot I have is 254 yards. I am going to set it for 250 yds and spend some time shooting. I want to dead on next August.

I have the same rifle but only in a ,223 I had to play with it to find the round it likes the best but it shhots great now, I also did a triiger job on mine and got it down to approx, 1 1/2 to 2# that was not fun! I talked to the gun smith and he said it would be tough and I thought "how hard can a trigger be on a single shot" Well I got the trigger out and took care of it in about 30 min. I then took me over and hour to get it back together it was a night mare, But the gun ius now awesome. I bought it when I was in a wheel chair after an accident and I use to wheel myself out to the patio and shoot to kill time I even got to take care of a few predators with it. great gun for the money.

Yesterday was the first day of deer hunting season here in SC. I dropped a nice cow horn buck at 7:00 am with my new 25-06. It was sweet! Perfect shot placement (halfway up behind the shoulder), and that little wildcat cartridge did it's thing. No need to look for him. He fell right where he was standing. His heart and lungs were shattered. The exit wound did do some damage to the other shoulder (he was standing quartering away from me), but no where near the damage my 30-06 would have done. I only hope that there are many more to follow. As a matter of fact, I've got to go. I can hear the woods calling me.

I hunt deer quite a bit w/ the old 257 Roberts. It is a step down from the 25-06, but w/ 120 gr. ballistic tips and hand loaded shells I feel fine out to 300 yards. Like others have said its all about shot placement. Deer are not hard animals to kill if hit correctly. All you are trying to do is "pop a ballon" - that is their lungs and they go down quick. I shot deer w/ everything from the 257 to a 300 mag and the 25 cal. is definately a very good deer gun.

wvduece,

I'm in Columbia. Dillon is about 1 1/2 hours away from me. If you are coming to SC and staying for a minute then let me know. I don't have any places in Columbia to hunt, but you are welcome to travel with me to my hunting spots. I am always looking to meet new people.

I have a Rem. 700 in 25-06. What I have used since the 70's. There is nothing like it. I handload 115 nosler partitions. I have killed numerous deer with it and never had one to leave the spot of impact. Never recovered a bullet either. Complete penetration.
You got the best IMO.

BR how is your pup doing.... I started one of the females, other is my pet I guess because she likes me better than a rabbit. She's looking good but is going to have to be broken off of deer same as her parents were. Can't figure out why I'm the only one who don't have naturally trashproof dogs! ;)

And about the gun, it's fine, but it ain't a 7 mag. That thing puts um down way out yonder, and the shot does not have to be right in the kill zone. You can just break their shoulder and not worry about looking for the deer.

Hey Larry,

Choco is doing just fine! I have no complaints. We only had one deer incident since I have had him. I was taking him for a walk one day, and we walked up on 7 deer. He didn't see the deer so I turned around and went in the opposite direction. The deer must have done the same thing. When we got to the other side of the track they were standing in the middle of the road. He saw them and got excited when the took off running. I let them run out of sight and turned him loose. As soon as he got to the tracks and opened his mouth, I lit him up! He got on another set of tracks and opened again, and I made him do the electric slide. When we got to where the road spilts he came across another set of tracks, he lifted his head dropped his tail and ran straight to me. We haven't had any problems since then. We have been in plenty of areas that hold deer, but he hasn't taken to running any. What's going on with his sister that has not started yet?

The 7 mag is a good gun, but around here it tears them up too much for my liken. I have two friends that still use theirs and they are now looking for something else.

she probably just needs a couple good sight chases. Other one is making a thicket dog and has that big squall like yours. I have one male that will go back to the truck if I so much as bump another dog for opening on a deer. He won't quit a rabbit if a deer gets up but he has had enough of ol forky toes. The pups' dam was not easy to break but the sire was broke with one lesson and Ronnie says he has never offered to run deer since. I let the dam run deer too much hoping she would self break which sometimes happens if none of the other dogs go with her, or if you hit the one with her pretty hard.

What's the best deer rifle has been argued since before you or even I was born and the beat goes on. Sells a lot of rifles and cartridges.

I forgot to tell you that I did finish the season with two deer from the 25-06. One cow horn buck that I mentioned earlier, and a really big doe. Both of them dropped right where I shot them. Would have used it more, but it's a single shot. When the rut came in, I wanted something with more rounds. So, I opted to used the old faithful 30-06 semi.

Really glad I did. I didn't kill anything nice duruing the rut, but the post rut was a lot better. The day after Christmas, I was in the stand and two bucks came to the plot together. I could tell that one of them was a nice one when they came around the bend. They were already walking broadside; so you know the rest of the story.

They smaller buck stopped and the seven pointer took his final 4 steps to get ahead. The dirty-thirty went to work! I guess the 4 pointer was not moved by the most recent event. He just stood there and proceeded to eat. I was greedy (I was behind in the buck count) and decided to grab him too.

Next year, I think I am going to lock the 30 up, and hide the key. The 25 needs more of my attention. She's jealous.

I've got a Tikka T3 Lite in 25-06 that I bought two years ago. I topped it with a Burris Fullfield II 3x9 and wow is that a slayer. My dad is a hand loading magician so I just bought him the components. I have winchester primers, Remington Nickel plated brass, and 117gr Combined Technology Bullets. I am getting sub 1/2" groups at 100yds with this set up.

The third day I had the gun out my sister jumped a big ten point out of a blow down. He was broadside at 75 yds running for all he was worth. I let one fly and he went down like he hit a Mac Truck. I won't be using anything else for whitetail ever again.

J243,

I have been looking at getting me a Tikka T3 in a 25-06. I really wanted a 7m-08, but they don't make it. I have heard that the Tikka is a sweet handling rifle in almost any caliber. Maybe, I will have worked things out before the season comes in in August.

Where did you get yours, if you don't mind me asking?
