How cold is it..........

Same here Steve, -5 with a wind chill of -30. Stepped outside this morning and one of my walker puppies was just sitting outside his dog house like it was 70 degrees. I actually walked up to him to make sure he was not tangled or something and couldn't get back in. The rest of em, never even looked out thier holes.

I went to the UP of MI last year and thought that it was a hunter's paradise. I thought about moving up there I liked it so well(beautiful country), but when you talk about those below zero temps it scares me!
Maybe I'll just visit in early fall. Here in southeastern KY, it's about 20+ this morning with a couple inches of fresh snow. I love rabbit hunting on snow; maybe I'll sneak out out of the office after while.

In the north part of Wisconsin it's been darn cold for about a week and a half now high's barely reaching the single digets. Been trying to run the hounds but it 's been tuff. The snow we have is all hard pack ice, dogs cutting their feet. Tomorrow and sunday sposed to get in the 20's hopefully the running will improve. GO< PACKERS!

I enjoy hearing about conditions in various parts of the country and how folks deal with their own set of dog-related problems that nature cooks up for us. The wind died down late last night and it was 13 below this morning. It felt a lot warmer! But now the wind is blowing about 15 to 20 again so it's still cold. My kennel is fully insulated but not heated. The boxes are two feet square and 18" high and offset from the entry by a set of baffles that keeps the wind out. Each box has 2" of styrofoam insulation on all sides and with 2 dogs per box they stay comfortable. Sometimes they get too warm even in cold weather and want to lie in the entry way. Never had any trouble from cold as long as they are well fed, dry and out of the wind. The sun shines on the front of the kennel buildings and the dogs were outside sitting in the sun once it rose enough but now the wind has pushed them back inside. Keeping water for the dogs is the tough part.
Harvhounds, ayuh, that's me. The old dog is now gone but I'm keeping his line going. Sure miss him when the running gets tough. Some days below zero we have great running, others are a bust. Fresh snow makes for the best running, regardless of the temperature.

Steve......was -33 below here in Crown Point, NY this morning.....warming up to -25 below today and is suppose to be close to -40 below tonight (friday). We are running dogs at Upper Hudson BC tomorrow morning....should be 30 below by the time we drop the dogs....can't wait......gonna see who has the nose tomorrow.........have had great gun season here so far.....been tough on feet but we are having a great Hare season......take care.......Ron Siver, Crown Point Dog Supply.

I cant even imagine trying to run in that.........my hats are off to you all! You are true men ; )

The coldest I recall was -36 without the wind chill. I think it was -70 something or colder with the windchill. This was when I was a kid still in High School and we went out X-Country skiing in that crap. It was ok when in the woods, the pines stopped the wind and as long as you kept moving and generating heat you were fine. The oil on the dipsticks looked like candy being made on mom's stovetop, as soon as you took it out it got all stringy and hard.

That was well before I had hounds, I don't think I would have considered going out hunting in that...

Ron, I'm grateful to know we've got it good compared to some places! Wish it wasn't so far to Upper Huson- I'd love to test my best hounds against those good dogs out your way. I'll bet Dick Doyle will be hard to beat! He always has some great nose in his kennel. It's just too darned far for me to travel. Our club (Sunrise County) has talked about sponsoring the old Can-Am Snow Trial again, but we'd need a lot of help to run it as we're a small group. But we've got a great running grounds and we're fairly close to the New Brunswick border so we'd be within driving distance of a lot of beaglers from both Canada and the States. I was fortunate enough to get a 4th place at the last Can-Am held at Richelieu in about '95. It sure was a lot of fun going up against the hounds that were winning all year and beating some great hounds with my unknown hunting dog. As I recall, we were narrowly beaten by IFC Ray's Ben and FC Maravic's Mimi but beat some of the hounds that are now legendary in field trial circles. I love the chance to compete against these hounds on snow.

was - 25 when i went thru town this morning and -17 when i came home. at my buddys house was -37. dogs ran halfway decent.. . got a few hare but the cold was bothering them and they didnt want to hunt after a few hours...run around on three legs holding one foot up at a time to warm it.. these are same dogs that cant run on ice last week.at 25 above. . they can run on snow at twenty below no problem. worthless when u cant see a track. pete

I have read alot of your posts.

Just woondering if you have ever seen a dog with enough noise to suite you?

I know you are crossing differant dogs and such to get more noise so I'm assuming you have seen or had a dog that impressed you? If so what was his breeding?

Pete, all I can say is GOOD LUCK! It was 16 below this morning and I can handle that but I hope to never see minus 30 again in my life! You are absolutely right though that the dogs can have a worse time at 25 degrees than minus 25. We've seen that over and over again.
